It’s definitely a change of mindset, and sometimes people get confused between the role of a business manager and a project manager. For product manager the first thing to learn from their fellow counterparts is how they are owning up things, you need to learn the skill on how to hold the pen in the product cohorts. As a PM, you are not getting hired to design, neither you are hired to code or QA. You are hired for INSIGHTS. Your KPI is Insight/Hour. What kind of Insights: 1) Who are my actual customers ? 2) What are their motivations and pain point ? 3) What should be the value proposition to address point 2 ? 4) How to effectively prioritize to ensure all stakeholders understand and align with the bigger picture ? 5) How to effectively communicate across teams and hierarchy in written and verbally during different meetings ? 6) How to use data and insights both from the users as well as organization stakeholders to create a win win product for all? 7) In the end the PM should see road a month ago and remove obstacles for teams to ride smoothly.

Engineering is a skill and Product Management is a mindset. - You can't learn overnight and in order to become one - I did start thinking as a Product Manager in real life - which changed my perspective on lot of things.

Because the Product Management role is so varied, there are a lot of opportunities for people with different skill levels and strengths/weaknesses. That said, you need to understand what you look like to an employer - and fill in the blanks. For example, if you have always focused on early products, that's great. Make sure you are showing off your skills in that regard, but also make sure you are able to talk to every aspect of early products: defining the MVP, testing the market, planning your go-to-market, identifying that first problem area you are solving, finding complementary partners to get ready for go-to-market, etc. in WHOLE. At this point, don't worry about getting the growth skills - focus on what you know and double down.

It all starts from the very first question - Tell me about yourself. This question gives you all the opportunity to steer conversations in directions you like. Remove everything from your mind and just focus on the following to ace anything (interviews or practical situations) out there: - Be logical and apply common sense - Understand your customer needs and pain points and focus on delighting them - structure over chaos (structure your thoughts and connect them in a logical manner) - define how can help the business gain by eliminating customer pain points - be humble, good listener, and accountable I don't think we need any rocket science wodoo skills to make it out there. One's experience is always handy to tackle difficult situations, but even without that experience, one can steer through by applying above points while being calm and composed! :)
