How can you level up from GIS technician to analyst or manager?

Thanks Jennifer. If you want to be a geospatial manager, you need a complete new and unfamiliar talents from simply being a technical professional. It may seem better pay wise but you maybe hopeless at it unless you learn the management talents required and it may be a lot less satisfying. This was my experience.

To advance from GIS technician to analyst or manager, broaden skills beyond GIS, mastering data analysis and programming (Python, R). Obtain certifications like GISP and explore project management. Take on leadership roles, showcasing problem-solving and communication skills. Stay current with industry trends, build a professional network, and seek mentorship. Demonstrate strategic thinking and decision-making capabilities. Emphasize these skills on your resume and in interviews to position yourself for roles requiring a broader skill set, paving the way for career progression.

One thing that I understand is that a GIS Technician involves using GIS software and technology to collect, analyze, and manage spatial data. And GIS analyst uses the data to make decisions.

For me, seeking opportunities to work on a variety of projects to gain broader work experience is very important. Working on a range of projects exposes you to different aspects of GIS, from data collection and analysis to visualization and reporting. This experience is invaluable because it gives you a well-rounded skill set. Through exposure to different projects, you might discover a specific area within GIS that particularly interests you, which could lead to specialization. Specializing in areas like remote sensing, spatial analysis, or GIS programming can make you a highly valued expert in those niches.

In my experience, I believe GIS analyst is the one who performs the analysis operations on raster or vector data using GIS software and tools with his knowledge and wisdom. And manager is the one who overlook the whole operation.

According to my professional journey up till now. I have used GIS in urban planning, real estate, and research for all of the problem solving queries. I understand that the importance of portfolio can help you land on an amazing oppurtunity.

Showing specific examples of your work is very important when seeking a new role. In addition to the products themselves (projects, maps, applications), it can be equally important to emphasize outcomes. A GIS analyst or manager will not only work independently, but will take initiative and solve important problems in their organization.

One thing I have found helpful during my career that attending events will not only expand your professional circle, but helps you grow personally. You will understand real world issue and problems closely, so your contribution is meaningful.

Yes, to actually work in the industry, certificates play a significant role. They show that you have hands-on experience. They boost your professional CV and back you up in any interview you may appear in the future.

Pursuing my Master’s degree in GIS management while working full time was one of the most challenging and rewarding endeavors of my career. I found this program to be especially valuable because of the emphasis on leadership in the public sector and strategic planning. This training helped me develop from an individual contributor to an emergent, transformational leader. Along with validating my skills in the field, it also gave me an opportunity to network and learn with professionals whom I otherwise may not have connected with.

In my experience, taking initiative and leading where appropriate is something that is important for anyone hoping to build a career. I consider this step one, rather than step six as this list does. The best way to earn the role you are aspiring to be in is to start today. Seek challenges related to your goals and do work that speaks for itself.
