How can you learn to be a successful database administrator?

Becoming a DBA requires both technical and business skill. Technical ara mandatory to run and maintain the system. Business are necessary to understand how the DB environment will evolve based on the business needs and evolution. This becomes critical in high growing companies and in fast transactional business. This knowledge will help to apply also the security rules at business level and enable to enlarge the security framework to the entire system craeating a tailor made setup and creating more efficiency within the run model.

To be a successful database administrator, focus on: Understanding of database management systems Learn about indexing, normalization, backup and recovery, and performance tuning. Understand data security principles, access control, encryption, and data masking. Ability to troubleshoot and resolve database issues efficiently, related to performance, connectivity, or data integrity. Able to create reliable backup BRP plans to ensure data continuity in case of failures. Monitor and optimize database performance by identifying bottlenecks, and configuring server resources effectively. Use scripting languages to automate routine tasks. Collaborate with developers, system administrators. Stay updated with the latest technologies.

Database administration has a low barrier to entry. Most of the database vendors offer free solutions for those wanting to learn their product. In many cases, the database systems can run locally on modest hardware or in a free (or relatively free) cloud environment. That being said, hands-on experience in the tools is a must for mastering the fundamentals -- build it, break it, fix it, and repeat. The DBA who is familiar with set theory and Venn diagrams will be able to master the concepts of joins, intersections, and unions quickly. Set theory also works as a foundation to the relational model, data modeling, normalization, and SQL syntax. The key is to think of data in sets not rows.

We need to run up and beyond the database architecture to learn more about it. Move around and try different languages for SQL and also experiment with various different kinds of front end languages. And from my experience I can add that only practice can make you better understand how databases work and operate.

Most databases can be bifurcated into: - OLTP database for interactive (real-time) queries - OLAP database for batch queries Traditional databases follow ACID (atomicity, consistency, isolation, durability). But there are many new databases which pick only one or two aspects of ACID so that they can optimize around a feature which makes the database unique. As a database administrator its all depends upon the needs of organization and amount of data to store. 1-First requirement then application web-based or destop application. 2-Server according to data storage need.

Go deep. Know the old versions of your engine cold, and keep up with the new and what's coming. More than a Developer or Architect, a DBA needs to know the engine. You'll be looked to for tuning and scaling best practices, and on call when s**t hits the fan. On that latter topic, study up on how to instrument and diagnose your engine. Your employers may be bleeding money every minute or hour you're down - hopefully not, resiliency should be built in to production systems, but you can't dictate what you'll be called on to maintain.

Practicing the negative things rather than the positive things will teach you a lot. The things that are not possible in the DB for that you need to practice more. The positive things that are part of the syllabus are easily available and implemented, but the negative things that are not available that can be practiced to gain more knowledge.

Want to be a <insert your database here> administrator? Use them in your own projects. Write tools to monitore them ( I know, already exists , but think about learning, didatics and practice). Write applications to save and retrieve data. Learn about edge cases your db can’t solve. Learn about indexes, joins and how your engine execute queries. Learn explain plans. Break the database and fix it. Backup, restore, replicas, sharding and access methods to other databases. Gpt can help a lot here. Also, learn SQL. Mandatory skill for relational databases!

The best way to take command on database first observe the application which you want to develop then create your database module wise and dry run your project, once each module (Insert, delete, update, search). Once all modules create then bind them in the form of once application. Take the requirements then set the security levels accordingly to the database by creating dashboard, admin panel / portal.

I believe in best practices that we follow before software installation/upgrades/migration/other activities. Because, it fixes most of the problems and avoids future ones. If you have a proper SOP with best practices, then activity is just a single click and will happen smoothly, but if you don't have proper SOP then, the activity can take longer time to complete and can have many issues.

We sould have the knowledge of all latest trends especially data analysis tools like Microsoft Power BI, Tableau etc.... Integeration of AI feature in your database that can work like human which we named as AI bot....

The more you continue to improve the implementation of good practices in your environment, the more you will deliver value to your customer. Whenever possible, create mechanisms to collect statistical data from environments and automate tasks to ensure quality and performance.

After you have got a good grasp in Database, one should follow and learn from the industry experts who write articles, magazines, blogs, and posts on social media. The best practice comes from knowing about different frameworks and standards that the group of experts have set up in the industry and market.

I'm going to suggest extreme caution when it comes to supposed Best Practices/Trends. A perfect example of this is the decades old "Best Practice" that most of the world still follows for Index Maintenance in SQL Server. The trouble is, it was never meant to be a "Best Practice" and is, in fact, a WORST practice. If you look at all the BBFAATT (a "Moden-ism) for Books, Blogs, Forums, Articles, AI, 'Tubes, and Talks), almost all of them say fragmentation CAN hurt performance... and nearly none of the provide any demonstrable proof that it actually does. Just because a million people are repeating something, doesn't mean that what they're repeating is actually correct. Challenge everything! At the very least, you'll learn something new!

After we have had a good knowledge and experience about databases, one should get more involved into the discussions and forums with the experts and we should also welcome constructive criticism for our work and input.

I can say from experience, nothing is more valuable than having diverse resources that you can draw from. One person cannot possibly be a walking encyclopedia of all possible information or scenarios. In any field, you will always have to look to others who have different experiences and different challenges. The wealth of knowledge they can provide is invaluable. So don't be afraid to say "I don't know..." just be prepared to also say "but I will get the answer!"

Be sure to backup your data! The 3-2-1 rule directs organizations to back up data on two different types of media. It is good to have one of these air-gapped so that if you suffer a ransomware attack you can revert with minimal losses. Try the Tower of Hanoi backup retention scheme and test your backups and have a business continuity plan which you've at least stepped through one or two times per year.

Don't forget to learn how to secure your database environment. Please consider these aspects : 1. Data encryption 2. Audit access 3. Patch the database version to the latest version
