Before embarking on expansion, it's crucial to evaluate your non-profit's current state. Are your mission and vision clear? Do you have the support and infrastructure needed for growth? This initial step ensures you're not just ready but poised for the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Assessing readiness is crucial before embarking on growth, and rushing can lead to pitfalls. Engaging an external consultant or agency can provide invaluable perspective and expertise. These fresh eyes can also offer insights that internal stakeholders might overlook, helping to ensure a comprehensive assessment. Utilizing quantitative data across all organizational dimensions is essential for an accurate evaluation. Achieving alignment among key stakeholders is paramount. Everyone involved must understand and agree on the results of the readiness assessment before proceeding further. This collaborative approach sets the foundation for a successful growth strategy, mitigating risks and maximizing opportunities for advancement.

As part of assessing your organization's readiness, leaders must assess the current state of their teams. Growth is a team effort, no matter how talented and committed the top leader is. Assess the capacity, adaptability, morale, individual goals, and overall potential of your current team and identify gaps in staffing or training opportunities. Whenever possible, allow your team members the opportunity to grow by actively engaging in the process of organizational growth.

Rightsize growth ambition with human and physical capacity--too many organizations secure funding and commit to growing impact of program without sufficient preparation and building the team (and resources) to deliver high quality service delivery.

The most important component is do you have someone with the right skills to lead the organisation into growth. It’s great to grow but is the foundation solid to build on. Do you have systems, procedures and software in place and is your team equipped to handle the growth.

Deciding how to grow is as important as the decision to grow. Will you expand existing programs, add new ones, or maybe extend geographically? Each path requires a unique strategy, so choose one that aligns with your goals and capacity. Ensuring sustainability is key in the long run.

Growth can also include merging with or acquiring other organizations who serve the same community you do. In mergers and acquisitions, getting clear on the expected benefits of this approach is essential, as is a thoughtful plan and budget for how you will merge or integrate the organizations' cultures, teams, and supporters.

When the vision of an organization is simple enough for every team to understand that they are vital to the fulfillment of such, ideas will flow from each team member to grow the organization. The leader depends on the mentality that the "boots on the ground" do provide the best knowledge on how and whom to grow with for a particular goal in the organization.

Organisations operate in very dynamic environments. For them to remain aligned to their visions requires good understanding of the operating environment. The target consumers keep changing preferences, delivery approaches keep changing, resources keep getting scarce and all this requires different coping strategies so as to survive in business.

Knowing your stakeholders is a starting point of knowing how to relate with them. They are involved and informed depending on their level of influence. This is possible when you have a good understanding of your strategic direction and the kind of relationships you need along the way to achieve your objectives. This however keeps changing as stakeholders drop off and coming in

On lession I learned quick and fast is that growth is not a solo journey. It involves board members, staff, volunteers, and the community you serve. Keeping these groups informed and involved builds a shared commitment to your non-profit's future and ensures their support when it's needed most.

I’m always for some creative stakeholder engagement! Some ideas for ways of doing this: - Team Meetings: Regular check-ins to share updates, gather input, and address concerns. - Donor Appreciation Events: Hosting events to thank donors and keep them informed about our progress. - Volunteer Opportunities: Providing chances for beneficiaries and community members to get involved in our projects. - Feedback Surveys: Sending out surveys to gather input from stakeholders on our programs and initiatives. - Collaborative Decision-Making: Involving stakeholders in key decisions and problem-solving sessions. - Social Media Engagement: Using platforms like Instagram and Facebook to share our story and interact with our community.

The mere fact that your stakeholders are there with you side by side means a lot. It is during vital stages of labor that they can stray away as a result of mismanagement in communication. William Ury says "When you listen to someone, it is the most profound act of human respect...". You show respect to the stakeholders by listening to their ideas, suggestions, or plans that they might have. That will make them feel immensely valuable as they know that more than just someone working for them instead of working with them. Prov 24:6 "...in abundance of counselors there is victory..."

Understanding available capacities through a comprehensive capacity assessment of structures, leadership, human resources, and generally organizational systems. The key is to generate an organizational development plan and ensure that strategies are generated and implemented to close available gaps. The key is also to hire the right people with prerequisite skills and competencies for the task. More is to establish sustainable, flexible, and workable systems that can deliver the job.

Effective growth demands careful resource management. This means not just securing funding but also ensuring your human and operational resources are scaled appropriately. It's about doing more without compromising the quality of your work in the long run.

In a nonprofit setting, because employees tend to be passionate about the cause, it is easy to become overly optimistic and take significant risks, in the name of increasing impact. So, when making growth decisions, make sure you have people at the table who are pushing for growth, as well as people who are more conservative. Allow all perspectives to be heard, and work toward consensus about the amount of risk that is appropriate under the circumstances. When growing any organization, it is critical to strike a balance between risk-taking and caution. It is critical to not get too far ahead of your team's capacity or your financial resources.

The "secret sauce" of any organization is team development. Creating a culture where human capital becomes a vital part of any success. By developing their capacities and investing in their potential they will become stewards of your resources as they behave as pillars of the fulfillment of the vision of the organization. Finances and technology are tools that will strengthen the infrastructure of your organization and none of these will fruition if the culture of the organization is not focusing on team development.

Nonprofit growth only matters if it's in service to your mission and it enables you to expand your impact. Pausing to celebrate the ways you are making a more meaningful impact becomes a virtuous circle: It energizes employees and volunteers, and it motivates your customers/donors to continue supporting your cause. The more effectively you communicate your growing impact, the stronger your organization becomes and your capacity to make an impact snowballs.

Identify and be transparent with your milestones and key performance indicators. In my experience creating simple, thorough, consistent reporting will increase buy-in across constituencies. Make the reporting a non-negotiable among your key staff - there is no “bad” data, unless you bury the information.

Keeping an eye on our impact is key. Using tools like impact assessment frameworks (I like Social Return on Investment and Theory of Change) and data dashboards (like Salesforce Nonprofit Cloud and Tableau) can help you see what's working and what's not. By sharing our progress with stakeholders and learning from both our successes and failures, we keep moving forward and making a real difference!

Evaluating is a strong word while working on the project at hand. I prefer using the term "checking in" since it consists of brief and important info that maintains the focus of the project but forecasts where the mark is pointing. Once the project is completed, the evaluation MUST take place within 36 hours after its fulfillment. From there celebrate the good things and learn from the failures. Always knowing that the next time it will be done better.

Stop and take inventory. It is essential to the growth of your organization to make sure that your mission and goals are clear. Will this growth increase the impact of your non-profit? If not, it is important to think about what actions will expand your impact. Is it resource allocation, management practices, or outreach and communications? Without clarity, your growth efforts may lack focus.

Ensure your culture scales with growth. Before The Wooden Floor scaled, I interviewed CEOs from companies and nonprofit organizations. The #1 thing they said if your culture doesn’t transfer as you grow, then your strategies will fail. -We created a Growth Policy and Growth Filter to assess mission fit, resources and staff impact. -We developed and trained on our Guiding Principles which codified our “Why” to share with the staff and board. - We created Culture Buddies to onboard new staff and board members with a focus on purpose, engagement and connection. -We regularly survey on our culture practices through surveys: Best Places to Work Orange County and Board Source. Peter Drucker said, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast.”

The decision on whether to grow or scale is already embedded in your core purpose. Take the time to understand the scale of your core purpose. What is the scope of your purpose (how many people do you need to reach to truly fulfill your core purpose)? And what is the complexity of your purpose (how deep of a transformation is needed to truly fulfill your core purpose)? When you answer those questions honestly, you'll know quite clearly whether your organization needs to grow or scale (and they're not the same thing!). Grow = doing more of what you're already doing, without changing your operating model. Scale = leveraging a new operating model that lets you significantly expand your reach.

Only hire when you’re team is about to burst.. then ask them if they’d rather get a 15% raise or add another team member. Rinse and repeat. Hire revenue drivers. When you think you need to add support, hire another revenue driver. Hire slow. Slower then slow. Fire fast. Be deliberate. Growth unchecked will lead to your implosion.

You must have an attractive corporate identity: - a Vision which is of interest to potential members or potential partners - a realistic mission that can enable everyone to achieve their goals throughout the organization - attractive and humanly shared values. The package (the corporate identity) being well put together, you have to know how to sell the organization to potential members and potential partners. What are their interests in joining or becoming partners? - Personal achievement, - Contribution to a cause, After all this, it is necessary to carry out a market study to find out where the needs of the organization to be developed lie. Identify the right target audience.

In my experience, leading a nonprofit organization through growth and expansion involved several key aspects: A clear vision that aligned with stakeholders' values and goals was crucial. Engaging stakeholders in open communication, collaboration, and involvement in decision-making fostered support and buy-in. Financial probity ensured trust and credibility with stakeholders, while effective resource management optimized efficiency. Implementing robust risk management strategies mitigated uncertainties. Regular monitoring and evaluation of impact allowed for data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement. Also fostering a culture of innovation, nurturing talent, and maintaining a focus on sustainability were vital elements too.
