How can you keep your unique voice and style when incorporating resume feedback?

It always helps me to remember that the resume may be about you, but it isn't *for* you. Mirroring the tone (formal, casual, fun, serious, etc) of the job posting may open up possibilities to approach your resume slightly differently. Our clients write job specific summaries at the top of their resumes. While the point is to address the qualifications, there are often opportunities here to capture your voice and communication style.

I actually disagree with part of this. I think it can be helpful to ask feedback from an intelligent someone who is not in your field. Often when you are applying for a job "cold", the first person who sees your resume is a recruiter, not a hiring manager. That recruiter is likely not familiar with your field. If you can do a great job of explaining to someone not in your field what you do and show that you do it well, that puts you ahead of many resumes out there.

Don't get fancy with format, avoid using boxes, multiple columns, graphics or sections with bulleted keywords because when you submit it online, the Applicant Tracking System usually does not know how to read the non-standard formatting and you will spend a lot of time unjumbling the employment and education sections.

Don't always rely on tools like Grammarly or Hemingway to avoid mistakes. Visually scan your resume from the end to the beginning rather than the beginning to the end. The reason is you have developed a habit of what you expect to see and may miss words that when incorrectly spelled would still get through a spellchecker. For those who are not native writers or speakers of the country you are in, ask a native to review your resume, too. They will spot misuses of terms that may exist in your resume and help your writing by making it more appropriate for where you are living.

I've always said, that if you ask 10 different people how your resume should look? You'll get 10 different answers. It's the eye of the beholder. One tip I've harped on over the years. Don't be afraid to briefly put into italics, between each job, is the reason for each job change. Resumes routinely get tossed aside, if there's too many changes for someone's tolerance level - unless they explicitely see some rational reasons. This also gives a person an opportunity to tell a narrative, as if on the interview, and a way to personalize and tell their story. Most people will then further empathize. I've read quite a few hundred thousand resumes. Write as though you are speaking to someone instead of like a corporate lingo generator. It should highlight the selection criteria and make you look like a purple unicorn (someone perfect for the job that they don't want to miss out on). But the cover letter, that is where you sell yourself as an individual. This is where they can really feel who you are and if you're a good fit. Absolutely, get someone to review your documents - spelling, grammar, tips etc. and no, they don't have to be in the same industry. Professionals like the many who have posted here (yes, me included) are your best bet but try yourself first and see how you go.
