1 Assess your skills gap

Our world today has made data acquisition so easy.. With the right platform, one can keep track of certain skill gap amongst a team... Creating also a means to interact directly with team members also helps asses skill gap.... I always encourage a Monday morning 1hr assessment amongst team members, this would go a long way to improve performance..

Motivate employees to set aside time each week for self-directed learning provide endless support to pertain to what they’ve learned and be open to learning possibilities as you go about your day. Don’t just sit in on that negotiation with a procurement specialist; notice and learn his/her tactics and techniques as you engage with him/her. Ask product managers about product features; ask salespeople about industry trends; ask peers for feedback on your presentation skills. Make sure that there’s a dedicated online space for learning and promote it with meaningful contributions from business leaders.

In my experience, after identifying your skill gap and plan your training, you can get recorded training videos on platforms such as YouTube to watch and learn some techniques. Also, you may join online training groups to learn from experts on technical aspects of the field at leisure times or free times. Lastly, you can learn the skill by doing. Read installation manuals before installing an equipment. Take opportunities to work on an equipment while asking experts for directions. These can improve the technical aspect of an individual while still being occupied with work duties.

There are many options available, such as online courses, webinars, podcasts, videos, books, articles, blogs, forums, or newsletters. This is one very sensitive aspect of engineering most companies take for granted... Learning on the job, yes is helpful when it isn't left as the only means to develop FSEs.... a strict schedule should be followed to constantly keep engineers and technicians updated with latest developments.... Not scheduling a training time for engineers and technicians, would one day cost the company so much...except if you have developed a method of retaining staffs for a longer period to train new hands before leaving the company...

Well, in most cases this step never comes....since the previous step wasn't implemented...and in reality, most FSEs do trial by error on site...and when it comes out successful, thats the new skill acquired.
