In my experience it is better to follow. ELT instead of ETL as - ELT process loads raw data directly into the target data warehouse. Once there, you can transform the data whenever you need it. ELT handles all types of data, including unstructured data like images or documents that you can’t store in tabular format. ELT loads data directly into the destination system and transforms it in parallel. ELT has fewer systems than ETL, as all transformations occur within the target data warehouse. With fewer systems, there is less to maintain, leading to a simpler data stack and lower setup costs.

Data governance acts as a guiding principle, ensuring the health and balance of your data. Cloud-based services, like AWS Lake Formation and Azure Purview, function as modern sherpas, guiding organizations in cataloging, classifying, and monitoring data. These tools establish a fortified basecamp—a centralized data lake—with access controls, encryption, and auditing mechanisms. We are seeing latest advancements in the form of creating a unified governance on top of Data lake by. creating a metastore and importing the rule based access controls, to provide grants to the underlying assets. This approach provides better control of data when working with cross-functional teams.

DO NOT integrate your data lake directly with other cloud services. Instead, set up a landing zone that acts as an intermediary stage between the data lake and other cloud services. Curated and sanitized data, deemed safe via robust policies for sharing and utilization by various services, is moved or copied from the data lake to landing zone. This zone can have additional security layers such as further data cleansing, anonymization, or encryption based on specific requirements of cloud services accessing the data. By employing this structured and layered defense approach, organizations can leverage data across various cloud services while maintaining a strong security posture for the data lake infrastructure against unauthorized exposure.

Data lakes often serve as a singular repository for an organization's information, this makes them a prime target for cyber attacks.There are many ways to achieve data security depending on the use cases like -Enforcing Zero trust architecture. - Homomorphic Encryption. -Tokenization. -Fine-Grained Access Controls. -Drifts and Custom Anomaly Detection framework. -Data Masking. -Continuous monitoring and Audit. These are few methods if adopted could help mitigate the risk of your data getting compromised in case of a situation.
