How can you inspire your team to be more environmentally conscious?

Have you heard of Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV)? One of its guiding principles is Triple Bottom-Line Approach which focuses on People, Planet and Prosperity. When we talk about Environmental consciousness and Sustainable contribution, principles of GABV offer a good base for structured approach.

Setting goals also ensures that the team's efforts are aligned towards achieving measurable outcomes. Linking these goals to broader frameworks can further contextualise the team's efforts within global sustainability initiatives. This alignment can enhance the sense of purpose and motivation among team members, as they realise their role in contributing to larger, impactful environmental and societal goals.

Your objectives should be clear and understandable to every stakeholder you communicate with. Why this particular goal is important, what the benefit is. Goals should be achievable and have real value, not imaginary value. Some high-profile political goals may be a kind of PR strategy but will never be achieved, leading to doubts among stakeholders.

It is also important to not just set clear goals, but to ensure that those goals are easily accessible. That means that all member of your organization should be able to contribute to those goals, but that they should be easily remembered and reviewed. Your sustainability goals are dependent on the role that your organization wants to play in being a sustainable business, and the outcomes that would ideally arise out of those goals. However, these priorities will and likely should change. In other words, do not just make a list of sustainability goals some day and then tuck them in a drawer never to be seen again. Make sure they are regularly discussed in your organization and can be adapted and changed as needed.

I think 'Environmental Consciousness' needs to become a culture i.e. 'way of doing things'. Having shared beliefs, values, customs and behavior. Developing environmental consciousness as a culture involves fostering collective awareness, understanding, and commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. You build it with: a) Education and Awareness, b) Clear Communication, c) Good policy and practices, d) Engagement with stakeholders, e) Role modelling your beliefs and walking the talk etc.

You can provide your team with opportunities to learn new skills and knowledge related to sustainability, such as how to conduct a carbon footprint assessment, how to implement a waste reduction plan, or how to use renewable energy sources. You can also incorporate sustainability into your team's performance indicators and appraisals, and reward them for achieving their green goals

Educating and engaging your team in environmental consciousness goes beyond mere information sharing; it should be about creating a culture of sustainability. I recommend incorporating sustainability into regular team activities. This could be through 'green challenges', encouraging eco-friendly practices in a fun and competitive way, or regular 'sustainability minutes' in meetings to share tips or discuss articles. We also use team surveys to gauge interest areas and gather suggestions on what we could/should be doing as a team. It's important to make each team member feel like a vital part of your business' sustainability journey. As for training, Carbon Literacy Training is a great place to start and is highly accessible.

For this section, I look beyond “educate and engage” to “empower” as the theme here. Do this by, inter alia, providing access to knowledge and fluency around sustainability so that it is something teams are comfortable Integrating naturally into the conversation. Share and encourage a common vocabulary, expose team members to practitioners in their field to build their confidence that this is something real. Go see the kinds of things you want them to help accomplish. They should feel confident to explain the team’s/company’s perspective on sustainability and to provide reasons why this is in the interest of clients/stakeholders using their own examples.

When individuals feel valued and appreciated for their efforts and achievements, it can lead to increased morale, job satisfaction, and overall team performance. Rewarding and recognizing employees can take various forms, and its effectiveness often depends on the individual preferences of the team members. Some good examples of rewarding and recognizing are: 1) Verbal Praise and Public Acknowledgment. 2) Personalized Appreciation. 3) Financial Rewards. 4) Professional Development Opportunities. 5) Mentorship Opportunities. 6) Innovation and Creativity Awards etc.

Reward and recognition are always great methods to inspire people to achieve certain goals. Examples include prizes, discounts, bonuses, applauds, PR, featured articles about the ones who do well. Team reward can also be interesting not separating individuals but creating commons and each member earns a prize it can add to the team performance.

Leading by example is a very powerful way to influence the team to follow your footsteps to be more environmentally friendly. Authenticity is key when it comes to inspiring a team to be more environmentally friendly. As a leader, it is important to genuinely believe in and be passionate about the sustainability values you are promoting. By being authentic and passionate leader about sustainability, you can create a powerful impact on your team.

Actively engaging in the nonprofit sector is an effective way to feel accomplished while showcasing your commitment. As you do good, you will develop soft skills and find paths to translate your learnings into your job in the private or public sector. You can offer to involve your employees in your third sector projects to harness new opportunities for teambuilding.

Demonstrating desired behaviors and values rather than merely instructing others to follow them is highly influential. some major action points to effectively lead by example are: 1) Demonstrate Integrity, 2) Work Ethics, 3) Respect and Empathy, 4) Recognition and Appreciation, 5) Feedback and Development, 6) Strong communication etc.

Show, don't tell! Maybe just a little. While leading by example is great, it is important to explain the why behind. Explaining the why behind one's actions or decisions will produce much better results and buy-in than rather instructing to do things in a particular way, without a clear way to understand the merit.

Effective collaboration by: Clear communications, Shared Goals and Vision, Effective Conflict Resolution etc. Effective Networking by: Building genuine relationships, offering value to strengthen connections, understanding others' needs and perspectives, showcasing yourself being intentional and strategic etc.

I've observed clients employing innovative strategies to combine employee engagement with sustainability, fostering a sense of collective impact. To provide more context, under our "GoCircular100" initiative, we facilitated free donation pickups for employees from their homes. Some companies created internal Slack channels to initiate conversations about sustainability. Employees shared pics of the items they were donating & the stories behind them- donating the bag they received when they joined the company or the kid's bicycle they purchased with their first bonus. These anecdotes sparked meaningful conversations & enabled the company to effectively communicate its core values regarding sustainability in an engaging & relatable manner.

My team participated in a local river clean-up, which was an eye-opening experience for many and strengthened our commitment to environmental stewardship. In my office, we installed recycling bins, used energy-efficient lighting, and provided reusable cups and plates, making it easier for the team to practice sustainability in their daily work. Organising team-building exercises around environmental themes can be both educational and fun.

You can solicit and provide constructive feedback on your team's environmental performance and impact, and use it to identify and address the gaps and challenges in your sustainability efforts. You can also celebrate and share your team's successes and best practices with other teams and stakeholders, and create a sense of pride and ownership in your sustainability work
