The book that kindled my love for writing was S.E. Hinton's 'The Outsiders,' a novel I reaI when I was in school. It deeply moved me – the characters, plot, the raw teenage emotions. I was transported to the world of Greasers and Socs, and cried so hard when two of the characters died, illustrating the power writers hold to shape narratives and evoke emotions. Writing is so empowering; it allows us to steer characters towards joy or tragedy, life or death. This creative freedom is what makes it so captivating. For each student, it’ll be a different book. When it comes to early graders, I believe in just letting them write - whatever, however, and where ever they want. It could be about anything they saw or heard or what they'd like to watch on their Ipad. They even scribble a few words or write sentences. They can use a piece of paper, or a notebook or even use the white board. I give them the freedom to just express their thoughts into words! I've often seen this freedom of expression lead on to develop into a love for writing.
Students love seeing their work "published" or displayed - this needs to be encouraged from an early stage, right from when they are emergent writers. Labelling students' scribbles in the early years, creating classroom magazines, books and comic strips, using student writing in the classroom are all examples. Using lots of speaking and listening as prep for writing also helps students put their ideas and thoughts together. Doing a whole-class discussion before writing helps students who may struggle with ideas, and offering scaffolds in the form of sentence structures can help those who have lots to write about but struggle with drafting.

Love writing yourself and it will spiral outward. I've seen writers and artists eyes sparkle when they speak about their work and processes. The students can see and feel that too. When they see examples of teachers loving what they do, they will learn to respect it, and eventually for those who are interested in writing it could be a world of its own.
One thing I've found useful is being lenient with myself. Like a dear friend mentioned yesterday ...Instead of resolutions, when it comes to writing, intentions are more subtle, soft and doable. Intentions emerge from love, whereas resolutions come from fear.
