I would only add to the comments on being present when working the desk and surveying library patrons, that staff also needs to get out of the library to survey those who are not using the library if they want to determine barriers and needs. In my view, embracing digital transformation in libraries is like unlocking a new level of accessibility and engagement. It's about seamlessly integrating technology to enrich the user experience. The use of digital tools, platforms, and innovative tech like virtual reality, transforms the library into an ever-accessible and evolving space. It’s not just keeping up with the times, it's about leading the charge for a more inclusive and interactive library experience for all.
The term 'post-digital' is increasingly used in the context of libraries and learning spaces. At the core, it requires us to question whether leveraging technology will redefine the purpose of the library. In an age where students prefer to scroll up and down, rather than read left to right, we need to consider the implications of how we use libraries and build spaces within them for study. Is the nature of study forever changed by digital learning technologies? Do we even need physical libraries and books? These are key questions, as is using AI to enable students to retrieve information more effectively, by deploying it into archival and curation work to save time and provide more rapid response to students needs.
Libraries in the future will need to do several things to maintain their patron base in the future. 1. Deliver materials. It is important to evaluate the scale and resource requirements that a library has; these are large institutional spaces, with considerable physical and technological resources deployed to support students. One way to do this is to consider using the educational spaces and resources between universities, including but not limited to having one library for multiple universities or educational centres in the same geographical areas. This reduces costs, shares professional obligations and creates community cohesion in the local area by bringing together different students and staff into one place- a library as educational hub.
The sixth and final step to innovating your library user experience is to evaluate and iterate. This means measuring the outcomes and impacts of your innovation efforts and making adjustments as needed. You can do this by using qualitative and quantitative methods to collect and analyze data on your user satisfaction, engagement, and loyalty.
