We normally include Schedule Performance Metrics (SV, SPI, %Complete) and for some projects we do include a Milestones Gantt Chart to help illustrate the project schedule visually.

Using a comprehensive project dashboard which will cover anything ranging from % of work completed to key issues raised, risks identified, and costs incurred. The only thing that needs to be updated is the backend data which could be in either a Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, Excel, Power BI, or any other platform. The primary and most important thing to be considered in using such dashboards is to give enough time to planning and creating one. Making sure every project stakeholder has a say on it will add immeasurable value to this document. And next thing is to generate reports on a frequent basis and share it with the right people at the right time.

Accuracy should be the key for proper updated schedules’ incorporation into progress reports. I believe one of the critical factors, usualy overlooked during schedule updates, are the incorporation of impacts resulting from updated risk register, risk report and issue log. These 3 documents when not reflected properly on schedule updates may lead to dilusional progress report which ends up to reflect later on a gap between the reality and the understanding of the reports’ outcomes.
