When students have a say in the topic, they're more invested in the project, which fosters creativity and drives better outcomes. Let's take a user experience research project as an example. Imagine a class is assigned to improve the user interface of a school app. If students get to choose specific aspects of the app that they want to focus on—maybe the lunch menu display, event calendar, or homework tracker—their engagement skyrockets. They're not just following a curriculum; they're solving a problem they personally find relevant. This kind of vested interest can be a game-changer regarding the quality of work and depth of learning.

Using rubrics and checklists is solid, but there's room to explore additional tools and methods for establishing clear and flexible criteria. One tool not mentioned is "Milestones" — predetermined checkpoints where students can present their progress, get feedback, and make adjustments. This offers a structured yet flexible roadmap for projects. Alternatively, "Peer Review Sessions," where students could critique and learn from each other in a formalized setting. It adds another layer of assessment and dynamic learning. Finally, "Digital Prototyping" tools could be considered. In a project related to app design, prototyping software allows students to make changes in real-time, offering flexibility while sticking to core criteria.

I agree that offering a variety of resources and tools can make a massive difference in the PBL experience. However, one thing that often goes overlooked is the importance of "guided autonomy." While offering a buffet of resources is beneficial, learners can sometimes get overwhelmed by too many options. So, providing a guided pathway or recommending 'starter resources' can be helpful. Also, the idea of 'sandboxing,' where you give learners a controlled environment to experiment and tinker, can help them maximize the resources provided. Overall, it's about striking a balance: offering a rich set of tools while giving some direction.

Peer feedback is a valuable tool for making feedback cycles more scalable. That said, not everyone knows how to give good feedback. Simply arranging them into the right groups won't be enough. Instead, you'll want to lend frameworks for review. One simple method you can apply is the 'stop/start/continue' method. Another is to have reviewers pick one think they liked about the piece, one thing they wanted more of, and one thing they believe could use improvement (this is a strategy I learned from university writing center director). This moves the conversation from "Yeah, that was good" to specific and tangible moments of strength and weakness.

I think the article covers some excellent points on collaboration and feedback, but one method I'd add is 'peer review cycles.' These can serve as motivational boosts and are particularly useful for long-term projects. Finally, involving alumni or external experts in the celebration can offer learners a broader perspective on their work's real-world impact and relevance, enriching the learning experience.

Rather than simply encouraging reflection, consider creating guided reflection sessions. These facilitated experiences challenge attendees to probe the less successful parts of their work in a way we, as humans, naturally try to avoid. These sessions can be 1-2-1 or group and may be led by an instructor, a peer or, in the best case scenario, by the learner's mentor. Mentor-guided reflection is often the most impactful as it leverages the existing relationship and mutual respect between mentor and mentee.

Another aspect not covered is incorporating "real-world experts" into the project-based learning experience. Inviting professionals from various fields related to the project can provide unique insights and stimulate creativity among learners. These experts can serve as guest speakers, mentors, or even judges for the final projects. Their presence adds a layer of authenticity and urgency to the project, pushing learners to think more creatively to solve real-world problems. The interaction with experts can also help learners see the practical applications of their work, making the learning experience more meaningful and engaging.
