We sometimes forget that even though formatting content is important, when it comes to unpublished pieces, deep editing is what matters the most. Yes, you can format and beautify your piece, but focusing solely on that would be unwise. With unpublished work, you are the only one responsible for it and sometimes the only one who has read the piece, so deep editing is essential because you are not only putting forth that piece in your portfolio, you are essentially giving away your best work without an editor's input. When I have to send my unpublished pieces as work samples, I think of it as writing an assignment I will be graded for. This helps keep me grounded and set realistic standards for myself.

While I agree that published works hold more credibility, I believe that sometimes unpublished works can be equally good, and there could be several reasons why it did not get published. The timing is important as well. If you have something time-sensitive which could not be published in set time, you can always add the PDFs to your portfolio.
