We are dependent on members of the product development team and users for the acceptance, implementation, and success of our ideas. Listening from a place of understanding is critical. Listening to users allows you to gain empathy and see the world from their eyes. This allows you to create meaningful solutions that solve the underlying problems. To build a mock up to test with users you're going to need buy-in from the engineering, marketing, and project management teams. Listening allows you to show them a path to success by integrating their needs and goals. Listening is essential when negotiating conflict in a group. Understanding and communicating the other sides position will help deescalate it and open them up to your perspective.

2 How to listen?

Listening is not a passive or automatic skill; it requires attention, focus, and intention. To listen better in industrial design, you should prepare yourself before engaging in a conversation by clearing your mind of distractions and biases and setting a goal for what you want to achieve or learn. During the conversation, be present and attentive; make eye contact, nod, smile, and use verbal and non-verbal cues to show that you are interested and engaged. Additionally, ask open-ended and clarifying questions to explore the topic and understand the other person's point of view, needs, and feelings. Reflect and summarize what you hear to confirm your understanding and show that you are listening. For instance, what are they trying to achieve or solve with your design? What do they like or dislike about it? How do they feel about it? How does it fit in its context? What are the latest developments in industrial design? These questions will help you create designs that meet expectations, satisfy needs, evoke positive emotions, fit into the context, and are sustainable and ethical.

Listening is a skill that can be developed and enhanced with practice and feedback. To help you hone your listening skills in industrial design, consider seeking out opportunities to engage in conversations with people related to your design projects. Moreover, ask for honest and constructive feedback on how well you listen and communicate. Lastly, after each conversation, take some time to evaluate your performance and outcomes. Listening is not just about hearing the surface intention, it’s taking in the emotions that come with the words, and recognising the influence behind the words. When you listen to someone, you acknowledge what they are saying is important by asking questions or agreeing with them. Good leaders are good listeners, and it all starts with a listening mindset. It’s not enough to say you listen. It’s crucial to understand the importance of listening in leadership and then consciously practice active listening.
