Data analysis is a crucial skill for educational leaders who want to make informed decisions based on evidence and improve student outcomes. But how can you enhance your ability to collect, interpret, and communicate data effectively? Here are some tips to help you improve your data analysis skills in education.
Before you dive into data collection, you need to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve and what questions you want to answer. This will help you focus on the relevant data sources, methods, and tools that suit your purpose and questions. For example, if you want to evaluate the impact of a new curriculum, you might ask questions such as: How did student achievement change after the implementation? How did teachers perceive the new curriculum? What challenges and successes did they encounter?
Leaders can adapt the scientific method for their correlational and action research. Ask a question, do background research, form a hypothesis, test the hypothesis through action research or look for correlations, analyze data and consider possible conclusions, communicate results (and talk about your next steps.) Repeat.
Depending on your purpose and questions, you might need different types of data, such as quantitative or qualitative, formative or summative, or primary or secondary. You also need to consider the sources of data, such as student assessments, surveys, interviews, observations, or documents. You should aim to use multiple and diverse data sources to triangulate your findings and increase the validity and reliability of your data.
Data both possesses strength and limitations. The fact that amongst the most broadly quoted metas in education/educational leadership there is one with regular sample sizes of 5 and under tells us we can't necessarily trust all of what people use. Similarly, data is routinely applied to areas that it should never be. Don't be like those people. Be much better.
There are many tools and techniques available for data analysis, ranging from simple spreadsheets and graphs to complex statistical software and models. You should choose the ones that match your data types, sources, and questions, and that you are comfortable and confident with. You should also learn how to use these tools and techniques effectively and ethically, following the best practices and standards of data analysis. For example, you should know how to clean, organize, code, and categorize your data, how to apply descriptive and inferential statistics, and how to test your hypotheses and assumptions.
Thankfully a lot of data analysis tools and techniques are mostly looking for you to input information rather than do all the calculations yourself.
One of the most important aspects of data analysis is how you present and communicate your findings to your stakeholders, such as students, teachers, parents, or administrators. You should use visual aids, such as charts, tables, or infographics, to make your data easy to understand and interpret. You should also use clear and concise language, avoiding jargon and technical terms, to explain your data insights and implications. You should also be transparent and honest about your data limitations, challenges, and uncertainties, and invite feedback and questions from your audience.
The ultimate goal of data analysis is to inform and improve your educational practices and policies. Therefore, you should reflect on your data findings and how they relate to your purpose and questions, and how they can help you address your strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and gaps and needs. You should also act on your data insights, by implementing changes, monitoring progress, and evaluating impact. You should also revisit your data analysis process and outcomes regularly, and update them as needed.

I think some of the best data practices come from far outside of all of the established "education community" avenues and are found in data science, economics, psychology, sociology, and the like. It's worth stepping outside of the bubble to get some more clarity on research and statistics.
