Prototyping is a core part of UX design which if done properly can save tonnes of time to the product teams and money for the business. It an absolute must for testing the usability of your product, which helps in recognising any existing issues early on and saving the time of development teams as well.

A prototype is like a recipe. Now, imagine interactivity as the secret spice that elevates the entire dish. It's the difference between handing someone a cookbook and letting them taste the delicious outcome. With interactive prototypes, users don't just follow instructions; they get to chop, stir, and savor the experience. Consider a cooking app. Instead of static screens of recipes, an interactive prototype lets users virtually chop ingredients, adjust cooking times, and experience the cooking process. It's like turning a cookbook into a culinary adventure, making the user an active chef in their digital kitchen. Interactivity isn't just a feature; it's the magic ingredient that turns your prototype into a delightful experience.

Planning your weekend hangout is like prototyping for apps. Just as you'd create a rough plan and doodle the spot, prototyping sketches the app's plan before the actual event. Now, picture making it more exciting. Instead of describing the hangout, you create a mini-version of the spot. Interactive prototyping is like drawing a map of your dream college party. It's a sneak peek into the awesome time with interactive games and surprises, making plans come alive.

Prototyping is a dynamic way to optimize user engagement. Beyond testing design solutions, leverage prototyping to evoke emotions. Incorporate micro-interactions and transitions that resonate emotionally with users. Emotional appeal is a potent factor in fostering satisfaction and loyalty.

Experiment with a blend of prototypes. Use wireframes not just for structure but to test micro-interactions. Incorporate realistic elements into mockups to gauge aesthetic appeal. For interactive prototypes, focus on simulating key user flows. Each type contributes uniquely to testing various aspects; for instance, wireframes can be powerful for assessing information architecture, while realistic mockups excel in evaluating emotional appeal, desirability and usability.

When we talk about prototypes we refer to designs with which the user can interact. Prior to this we have more basic design processes to be able to have a preview of our possible design solution. If we see design as an ascending staircase, these would be the steps: 1. Wireframes on paper. The structure of our product, without details. 2. Digital wireframes. The sketches translated to digital. 3. Low-fidelity prototype. We add interaction to our wireframes, allowing the user to complete basic tasks. 4. Static mockups. With our prototype approved we start adding high quality assets. 5. High-fidelity prototype. We add interaction to our mockups providing an experience closer to the final version of the product.

Pit-Stop Prototyping: I like race. Every product has the circular loop to complete. Refinement is the key, but understanding the flow and creating micro-interactions is very useful to demonstrate the ideal design or sample versions of our design in a better way. Focusing on the 100% is a waste of time; focusing on the demo to get things done is a smarter way.

An effective prototype serves as a design-led and hypothesis-driven intervention, enabling low-risk exploration of an element of a design challenge with minimal time and investment. Its success hinges on the amount of learning achieved within a given timeframe. Keep it lean with these prototyping tips: ? Break down your challenge. ? Identify the riskiest design element. ? Quickly explore different iterations for solutions. ? Document questions and findings while giving precedence to subsequent actions. ? Utilize boilerplate items, design patterns, and existing elements. ? Prioritize speed over intricate design. ? Focus on key features. ? Consistently use the same tool. Prototype as early as possible. Learn. Build. Measure.

Prototyping is an ongoing process. Align goals with specific prototype types. Utilize tools like Figma or InVision for collaborative and real-time updates. For user feedback, conduct remote usability tests using platforms like UserTesting. Foster a culture of collaboration by sharing findings transparently with the team and stakeholders. Use the findings to improve the experience which will also reflect in the business goals.

Effective prototyping is an ongoing, iterative process that demands strategic planning, testing, and refinement. Clearly define goals and scope to provide focus. Choose suitable tools that align with your preferences and skills for easy sharing and updating. Conduct real user tests using interviews, surveys, usability tests, and analytics to gather feedback from a representative sample of your target audience. Use this feedback to identify strengths and weaknesses, iteratively improving your prototypes. Document findings and decisions transparently for streamlined communication with your team, stakeholders, and users.

Prototypes don't have to be complex. Complex prototypes require time, which is extremely limited in quick-growing companies. So, instead of not making a prototype, feel free to create a quick, raw prototype. Often, a 5-minute prototype in Figma made for an immediate corridor test would provide great insights. You can make a few of them every day. It wouldn't slow you down but boost the quality of design decisions.

The only thing that really matters is how quickly you can build the right prototype to communicate your story. There are majorly two types i learned, if you're working realistically on product, 1.) Single-path prototypes: single path, a precise narrative guides your intentions. 2.) Multi-path prototypes: you might conduct a live user test or share an interactive prototype on different channels to gather feedback before committing engineering resources... In a multi-path scenario, the primary challenge lies in how rapidly you can iterate based on feedback. However, with variables in Figma, you can now do this easily

It's a creative process bringing ideas to life, sharing your vision and approaches with stakeholders and make the initial design process easier and more beneficial.

During my time at Able, we used to create prototypes to ensure our ideas were clear to users before handing them off. ??? After gathering feedback and making adjustments based on that and our observations, we would then pass the files to the tech team. ?? However, it's worth noting that at times, we had to completely change our approach based on the feedback received. This helped us launch features with more confidence.

Define the goals, experiment with sample versions. I always use Framer and Protopie for testing. I document prototypes and create step-flow for on-the-go adjustments.

Consider including a point about user feedback and iteration. Just as your weekend plans might change based on friends' input, user feedback helps refine and enhance prototypes. It's like adjusting your hangout plans based on what your friends are most excited about, making the end product even more enjoyable for everyone.
