A weird example here is my relationship with my dog. While I try to include her "perspectives" when making most decisions that affect her, I am quite autocratic about some key decisions. For instance, no sleeping on the bed, no jumping on guests, no reckless running around when unleashed (unless I give permission to). Similarly, when the gap between what you know and what the students know in specific areas is WIDE, being autocratic ensures that learners are engaged, have a clear direction, and focus on only what's important. For instance, when teaching the alphabet, you really don't want to invite your learners to suggest alternatives or "think out of the box."

A part of being democratic with your learners is understand their "sensibilities" and "styles". You don't want to teach young teens the way you would senior executives. Consulting with them sometimes about what they like and don't like can also help you plan your learning activities and lessons better.

When managing a team of highly qualified teachers, I felt they needed to fine tune some of their classroom management techniques, sharpen their delivery and also build other non-academic skills. I developed the professional development program for the teachers there that was completely self-directed. While I provided a time line of things that they should focus on, self-learn and self-evaluate, my involvement in "teaching" them was minimal. Since they were highly motivated and highly competent, my pointing at the right direction, providing the resources needed to succeed and setting the milestones, was all that was needed.
