When data minimization done right, it will works wonder in terms of privacy risk, but sometimes some sensitive data need to be stored within the company for various needs or providing services, performing assessment to these needs is crucial to mitigate the risk of storing the data.

Encryption (or any technical measures i suppose) should be discussed between second layer departments who created the requirements with the engineers who impelements it, to mitigate disruption during the implementation. It is easy to propose ideal requirements or control for any risk, however it is better if it is actually doable on the field and agreed by the requirement maker and the engineers.

In and outs of the data within the company should be supervised closely, the ideal condition would be always work with anonymized data. However in many condition, this is not achievable, thus another control for this condition can be deployed such as access control to the data, and security measures at rest and in transit. There will be some cases where the only control that we can deploy is actually a legal control over our data, this can be applied if we are not in power to see what control that is actually applied by a third party (for example in relation with data sharing with government bodies).

Implement data auto-tagging. It's important to aware the risks occur in places where data are not structured nor organised. Having tools to automatic discover and tag is key steps to control this type of risks.

How can you improve data privacy in your organization? I feel lattered to contribute. It is quite easy in my point of view. You have to bring privacy to live in an organization. This does not really work by using top down compliance programms, policies etc. An organization has to redefine there culture and there approach to privacy. It is something you have to do with purpose and strive for the individuals who's data you are processing. All the rest are just tools to manage a legal requirement but this will not help to cope with data protection as a fundamental right if not the whole of the organisation wants to safeguard this rights
