Truthfully, I intended to confess that I have never understood what that phrase means. What could be universal in this life. But I make a quick check of Google and realized that UDL is just a collective stamp of approval for all the Progressive ideas popularized in the last 25 years. I have written articles mocking all of these ideas.

Seriously, suppose you are a teacher and you are told you have to teach in all the different ways to all the different people in all of the different subjects. I say the difficulty of teaching just doubled or tripled. So this is quite unfair to the average teacher. Also, it's a school's job and the teacher's job to sort through all the claims of pedagogical efficiency, and find the best ones! Do what works best for most students. Do it well! Think cynically for a moment and you will see that UDL is a time bomb or depth charge dropped into your school. The teacher will be so scatterbrained... Point is, this is a very arrogant and wasteful proposition. The essence of education and sophistication is that you make choices.

Another thing you see buried here, in UDL practice, is a constant need for meetings, conferences, and discussions. Another thing, the commentary here is claiming that UDL reinforces DEI. Not necessarily. Could go in the opposite direction. It's obvious the people speculating about this thing have no respect for other people's time. Does anyone know that there is a shortage of teachers? But still you want to squander their time and energy?

One thing, a very dark and cynical thing, that I see throughout K-12 is a tendency to introduce panaceas that turn out to be subversive. I can see this because I have learned to see it everywhere. But the ordinary teacher is not going to see anything amiss. Just more random busyness. Exhaustion. More weeks that accomplish less and less. Here is just one sentence from the instructions provided here: "You can do this by collecting and analyzing data, such as student work samples, surveys, interviews, observations, or test scores." And will this take days or weeks?
