1 MFA Methods

There are three main types of MFA methods: something you know, something you have, and something you are. Something you know is a secret or personal information that only you know, such as a password, a PIN, or a security question. Something you have is a physical or digital object that only you possess, such as a smartphone, a token, or a smart card. Something you are is a biometric feature that is unique to you, such as a fingerprint, a face scan, or an iris scan. Depending on the level of security and convenience you want to achieve, you can combine two or more of these methods to create an MFA system.

The “something you know” factor is the most common authentication factor. It’s easy to implement, but the challenge is how to balance security (e.g. password complexity) and usability (e.g. complexity to remember the password). For the other two authentication factors, “something you have” and “someone you are,” bootstrapping or binding a designated device emerges as the norm. Typically, a public-private key pair is set up so that the public key is registered at the backend and the private key is kept by the device to authenticate to the backend. With such binding, the device’s functions such as biometric authentication (e.g. facial or fingerprint) can be leveraged. That is, the “someone you are” factor is implemented on the device.

2 MFA Factors

When choosing the MFA methods for your system, you need to consider the MFA factors that affect the user experience and the security of the system. These factors include availability, usability, reliability, cost, and security. Availability means how easy it is for users to access the MFA methods from different devices and locations. Usability means how intuitive and user-friendly the MFA methods are for users. Reliability means how consistent and accurate the MFA methods are in verifying users' identities. Cost means how much resources and money are required to implement and maintain the MFA methods. Security means how resistant the MFA methods are to attacks and breaches.

One thing you may benefit from is adaptive methods. The idea behind this is adaptive or risk-based authentication, which dynamically adjusts the required authentication factors based on the user's behaviour and current context. For instance, a login attempt from an unfamiliar location might prompt additional security questions or require biometric verification. You may try to think about and focus on behavioural biometrics: keystroke dynamics or mouse use characteristics.

3 MFA Strategies

Based on the MFA factors, you can adopt different MFA strategies for different devices and scenarios. For example, you can use a password and a one-time code sent to a user's email or phone as a simple and widely compatible MFA strategy. However, this strategy may not be very secure or reliable, as the code can be intercepted or spoofed by attackers. Alternatively, you can use a password and a biometric feature, such as a fingerprint or a face scan, as a more secure and reliable MFA strategy. However, this strategy may not be very available or usable, as not all devices support biometric sensors or users may have privacy concerns.

MFA is highly effective against credential reuse, and large-scale phishing. For any mission critical systems, it's a must. But please know that the latest attacks on standard software-only solutions, it's easy to get a false sense of security. Stealing session tokens, fake login pages which steal credentials, SIM swapping, and personalized social engineering triggering users to send the SMS code are accelerating. If you're serious about security, consider hardware tokens supporting USB-C or NFC. If you select a biometric option, this hardens your posture from 2 factors to 3 factors: something you are, something you know, and something you have such the Titan key.

4 MFA Standards

An MFA solution implemented in one particular organization involved users receiving a daily one time password on their email. They would combine this one daily one time password with a single use OTP or authenticator code to login. This in theory could protect against MIM attacks or spoofing.
