How can you implement Lean principles in your workflow?

LEAN is a methodology based on eliminating unnecessary actions (waste) and increasing the value to the customer through continuous improvement. Waste is anything that the customer is not willing to pay for or any activity that consumes resources but creates no value, like defects, waiting,and inventory. Therefore, the organization focuses on knowing the customer and stakeholders about their short- and long-term needs and expectations and ensuring that this data is current, correct, and accurate in order to obtain the expected benefit and value of implementing Lean projects. Also, this stage is considered a research and development stage and extends to feedback from the customer or other stakeholders after using the product or service.

Value is the "why" of the work. Why bother doing that project? That workflow? That process step? The answer will be different when taken from different perspectives. Lean thinking challenges us to adopt the customer (or beneficiary) perspective when answering asking why. Specificity is key, as is challenging assumptions. For example: think customers care about on time delivery? Then ask: - Which customers care about it (more than others)? - How do they measure that - Why does it matter to them - What is the impact of being late (by different amounts of time)? It is critical not to stop with your own assessment. Validate by talking to customers, observing them, or if possible, running experiments to confirm / refute your understanding.

Once value is defined, we can streamline our workflow by eliminating non-value-added tasks and focusing on delivering what matters most to our customers. It presumes that: - You know exactly what all of the problems / opportunities in the process are, - You can design them to work perfectly on the first try, - You can execute the changes exactly as intended, AND - Your changes will be accepted by users of the process. Face it: you don't know all of that. So don't try to do everything at once ... find ways to iterate to get there. Still not convinced? Consider whether you want to deal with the current process the whole time you are designing the "perfect" solution. Wouldn't you rather make it a little better sooner, getting the value from the improvement while you improve the rest of the way?
