1 Choose an appropriate authentication factor

An authentication factor is a piece of information or a device that proves the identity of a user or system. There are three main types of authentication factors: something you know, something you have, and something you are. Something you know is a secret or a password that only you should know, such as a PIN or a passphrase. Something you have is a physical or digital object that only you should possess, such as a token, a smart card, or a smartphone. 2 Implement multi-factor authentication

Authentication factors depend on 3 things: what you know (password), what you have (OTP) and what you are (biometrics). The authentication option can be configured based on the context of the data and system that needs to be protected. You can also enable risk-based MFA which calculates a number of parameters before deciding to step-up MFA auth (like odd-time login). MFA is an important security control which eliminates many risks & threats and can greatly strengthen the security posture of your organization.

3 Use strong and secure passwords

Passwords are still the most common and widely used authentication factor, but they are also the most vulnerable and exploited. To protect them from unauthorized access, you should use long and complex passwords that include uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Additionally, avoid using common or predictable passwords, such as your name or date of birth. Furthermore, do not reuse the same password for different accounts or systems. To make sure your passwords are secure, use a password manager to generate and store them securely. Passwords must always be stored in hashed format and not encrypted format. The underlying database or disk can be encrypted. But the password value itself must always be stored in hashed format. Strong hashing algorithms like SHA-2 (minimum) must be used. To further strengthen the hash, a random salt can be used, which is unique per user. The salt is appended with the clear-text password value and hashed. This introduces more randomness in the stored hash value and protects against offline rainbow-table attacks.
