How can you implement design thinking in your video production team's culture and mindset?

The primary difference between an artist and a designer is this - artists hate constraints, while designers love constraints. User’s needs and expectations are necessary constraints when designing video pieces for a client. These constraints don’t limit our creativity (an artist thinks so. Instead, they channel our creativity. These constraints give us focus! Every critique from a client is another chance to use our creativity to produce something stellar. This is design thinking.

Apple Inc. is well-known for its user-centric approach to design and innovation. One of the best examples of this mindset is the development of the iPhone. When Apple was conceptualizing the iPhone, they didn't just focus on making a phone with the latest technology; they shifted their focus to the user's needs and expectations.

Netflix comes to mind for this step...they are known for their commitment to experimentation and iteration in its video content production and recommendation algorithms. They have fundamentally transformed the way we consume entertainment by constantly refining their offerings based on data and user feedback.

In addition to this, it's vital to create and nourish an accessible environment where everyone feels safe and valued enough to share their ideas. Coming from an editing background, there were definitely times where I've made suggestions during production that have gotten dismissed, but in production, every phase is important and has to be heard in order to create the best possible outcome

I think of Pixar who is commited to storytelling excellence in animated films. They really place a strong emphasis on learning from both successes and failures. While their films are loved by all worldwide, they understand that not every project will by all be an instant success, and they use a design thinking approach to continually improve their storytelling and animation techniques. When Pixar creates a blockbuster hit like "Toy Story," "Finding Nemo," or "Inside Out," they don't rest on their laurels. Instead, they dissect what made these films successful.

The importance of making the video production process fun and enjoyable for both the team and myself is critical. Holding brainstorm meetings and getting feedback from your team fosters growth and collaboration and, in the end, makes a better production overall. Everyone's passion and enthusiasm will shine through in the work, and the audience will feel it too.
