How can you identify your writing strengths and weaknesses for career development?

It's your freshness, it's your appeal and it's your own reflection. No one writes/illustrates like someone else. Be creative!

What do you know about your writing in its current state? Usually we can identify certain aspects of our writing that we know aren’t really where they need to be. Conduct that personal writing SWOT. What are your writing strengths? Weaknesses? Where do you see opportunities for improvement and growth? Ask someone whom you trust and knows your writing well to review your SWOT and evaluate its content. That person may be able to provide additional strengths and/or weaknesses that you did not. What are the threats as they see them to your career opportunities based on your writing? Knowing your weaknesses is one thing, but having someone provide insight into what they see as weaknesses adds another level for you to work through.

Often what works for me, is reading my writing after some time has passed. Setting goals takes a great deal of self reflection, a skill that can be greatly improved by reflecting on our own writing after some time has passed. I have read things years later that I have written previously, and it gives me a whole new perspective on it. Sometimes I am a bit embarrassed (e.g., I wrote THAT?). Other times I am rather impressed (e.g., I wrote that?). Either way, I can learn something new about myself and focus on setting new goals for the improvement of my own writing.

You have to know the rules first before you break them. Especially when initially breaking into writing in a field, implementing the process of those before you is necessary to build a foundation. I think your passions and interests also play a role in your writing. My writing is better when I am passionate or interested in a topic, but on topics that I don't have much interest in, I think my writing would struggle.

What I most enjoy about writing is playing with words and finding connections that aren't obvious. Both preferences work well in writing poetry, humor, and manuscripts for children, which makes them fun to do and also indicates my strong suit. Since I love to learn, the necessity of research for nonfiction writing appeals to me, and since I enjoy people and discovering what makes them tick, fiction writing comes fairly easy. I'll take way too long, however, to write a business letter! So time can provide a clue in discovering a weakness.
