How can you identify your mentee's core values?

Core values are the fundamental beliefs and principles that define who I am, what I stand for, and how I approach life. These values vary from person to person and are shaped by a combination of factors, including culture, upbringing, personal experiences, and individual reflection. Some common examples of core values include integrity, respect, compassion, accountability, and innovation. These values serve as a moral compass, influencing my choices and actions.

Core values definition is quite simple. Strip away societal image you think you need to achieve. Strip away your concerns of what others will think,look in the mirror and say what, and who am I? What drives me with all that "stuff" stripped away. Core is Core! Not something you learn in a book, you only develop throughout life experiences, some you will emulate, others you will say "No way". If other's judgement didn't matter, and you stuck to your true CORE, life is actually less stressful, you can be YOU along life's journey. Embrace the real you, not what you think society wants you to be. Write them down, display them. Finally, your true CORE values will be tested, when under stress or pressure to conform. Don't give in. BE YOU!

I find that the best exercise is to imagine what you’d do to fill your days, if you suddenly found that you’d won the mega millions jackpot. You might spend a few months traveling, reading all the books you’ve downloaded and not read on your kindle, or simply catching up on sleep - but eventually, your friends would have to go back to work and you’d have to fill the days. What you’d do shows your core values: who and how you want to help to leave your dent in the universe. Spend some time writing out in detail how those days would look - then break it down and look for your themes. There are your core values.

Core values define us and help to shape how we choose to live, the relationships we have and decisions we make in life. As we grow and develop as individuals our core values may change but some are ingrained in who we are as a person, our culture and upbringing.

The best way to identify your mentee’s core values is by setting up recurring informal 1:1 discussions where you let them talk about themselves. Listen intently and make the conversation entirely about them. Ask them what they enjoy doing outside of their day to day work, what their passions are and what motivates them to show up and show out each day. It is important to ask the right questions as well. If they need a little motivation, do some fun activities and see how they contribute. Create a safe space for them to open up and be themselves - this is the most important part of all! As a mentor, you need to keep your commitments to your mentee. As you continue to meet with them, their core values will shine through.

Knowledge of my mentee's core values allows me to provide more personalized guidance and support. It's like having a map that helps you navigate and customize your guidance to match their particular path. Your mentee will be able to leverage these principles consciously by integrating discussions about core values into their mentoring sessions. They will be able to make decisions aligned with their authentic self and foster a sense of purpose.

Core values are understood to be ‘important and lasting beliefs or ideals shared by the members of a culture about what is good or bad and desirable or undesirable’. Values have major influence on a person’s behaviour and attitude and serve as broad guidelines in all situations. We don’t work for the sake of it, most are looking for something more meaningful, something that aligns with core values. Regular meetings with a mentor, can afford a sense of grounding in a volatile and unpredictable world. A mentor must understand their mentee's personal values and goals are often reflected within their professional ambitions.

Core values when aligned to mentoring allow both the mentee and mentor to get the most out of the relationship. Understanding your mentee’s core values can help you to support them with why they have certain opinions, views and the decisions they make. Challenging these will also be important to your mentee developing.

I get my mentees to complete The FuelValues exercise which helps them to articulate two key areas. Firstly, their core Personal Values which are fundamental beliefs that are well-developed and have probably been part of their character for years. Secondly their top Career Engagers, which highlight what is most important to them at work right now.

To identify my mentee's core values, I encourage my mentee to discuss their beliefs, principles, and what matters most to them. I suggest self-reflection activities or questionnaires that help mentees identify and articulate their core values. I pay attention to my mentee's actions, decisions, and reactions, as these can offer insights into their values. I inquire about moments in their life when they felt most fulfilled, proud, or motivated. This can uncover core values that underlie those experiences.

I use the SWOT analysis to understand my mentees' core values. Until a mentee does not identify their strengths and weaknesses, any attempt to understand the core values can prove futile. My work as a mentor is to strengthen their strong points and make them work on their weaknesses.

Mentoring is about unlocking potential. To find your mentee's core values: 1. Talk openly. 2. Watch their choices. 3. Encourage feedback. 4. Try values assessments. 5. Reflect together. 6. Embrace change. This journey aligns careers with what truly matters.

Another effective way to uncover your mentees core values is through scenario-based discussions. Ask how they would respond in hypothetical situations related to their personal or professional life. Ask them to explain why they made the choices they did.

Once I have a good understanding of my mentee's core values, I can incorporate them into my mentoring conversations finding ways to relate my guidance to these values. I help my mentee set goals that align with their core values to increase motivation and commitment. When addressing challenges, I consider how solutions align with my mentee's values, making them more likely to accept and implement my advice. I constructively provide feedback and recognize achievements based on their core values to reinforce their commitment.

In mentoring conversations, aligning with your mentee's core values is essential for fostering meaningful growth. Start by actively listening to understand their values, beliefs, and goals. Encourage them to reflect on how their values relate to their aspirations. During discussions, reference their values to provide guidance and context for decision-making. Respect and support their values even when they differ from your own. By integrating their core values into the mentoring process, you not only build trust but also help them make decisions that are consistent with their authentic self, leading to more meaningful and impactful personal and professional development.

Most of my sessions are based on sharing personal experiences. That being said, mentoring sessions are not about the mentor. It's about the mentee. I just try and add a direction to their thoughts.

I always start with their life story (and I am happy to share mine if they ask). Here I find I get to learn a great deal about them and often their values are highlighted here. These values apply both in their lives and in their business and we highlight them when working on the business.

In some cases, mentors and mentees may have conflicting core values. Here's how I address this challenge: I discuss value differences openly and respectfully, seeking to understand each other's perspectives. I identify areas where values align or compromise can be reached to maintain a harmonious mentoring relationship. If conflicts persist, I consider involving a neutral third party or a more experienced mentor to help mediate the situation.

Recognize that diversity in values is a natural part of human interaction and a way to make the mentorship experience better. Make sure you and your mentee know what all other values are, and make rules for how to deal with differences in the mentoring relationship.

The mentor-mentee relationship is focused on enabling and supporting a mentee to achieve desired results. Even in case of conflict of views or difference of values, a mentor should focus on understanding mentee's requirements and customize the approach in accordance with each session, without compromising on the achievement of end objective. It lies within the expertise of a mentor that how well we communicate the message and enable it's comprehension for the recipient to tie it with their goal. It is important for the individual who wears a mentor's hat to keep own perspectives aside, be adept with changing practice and trends in the industry to effectively support the mentee and have a fruitful association. #OmziTalks

Differences and conflicts don’t always have to be portrayed as a negative. If you have created the safe space environment with your mentee, you should be able to discuss these values openly, even though they may not be aligned. Valuing differences are important and can often be a learning opportunity for both parties. You may want to identify the core values you have in common, those that are misaligned and acknowledging the differences so each party is heard. If a serious conflict arises you may want to seek assistance from a third party.

When your work, life activities and goals are in sync with your core values, this creates an energy surge that can effortlessly lead you towards greater success and goal accomplishment. Review your chosen values and consider the following: 1 Think about activities or tasks you can add to your working day that are a good fit with your values 2 Think about where your values are met right now, how you can get more of that? 3 What is one small thing you can do tomorrow at work which is in line with your values?
