1 How DHCP works

DHCP works by using a client-server model, where a DHCP server responds to requests from DHCP clients. A DHCP client is any device that needs an IP address from the DHCP server, such as a computer, a smartphone, or a printer. A DHCP server is a device that has a pool of IP addresses and other network parameters that it can distribute to the DHCP clients, such as a router, a switch, or a dedicated server. The DHCP process involves four steps: discover, offer, request, and acknowledge. In the discover step, the DHCP client broadcasts a message to the network, asking for an IP address. In the offer step, the DHCP server replies with a message that contains an available IP address and other network settings for the DHCP client. In the request step, the DHCP client accepts the offer and sends a message to the DHCP server, confirming the IP address. In the acknowledge step, the DHCP server finalizes the IP address assignment and sends a message to the DHCP client, acknowledging the lease.

2 What tools and commands you can use

Troubleshooting IP DHCP issues requires the use of various tools and commands, depending on the operating system and device type. For instance, ipconfig /all displays the IP address and other network information of the device, such as the subnet mask, default gateway, DNS server, and DHCP server. This command can be used to verify if the device has received a valid IP address from the DHCP server or if it has a self-assigned IP address starting with 169.254.x.x, which indicates a DHCP failure. Additionally, ping tests the connectivity between the device and another device or a website by sending and receiving packets of data. Tracert traces the route that data takes from the device to another device or a website by showing the hops and response time. Dhcploc locates and displays all DHCP servers on the network. All these commands can help you identify any unauthorized or rogue DHCP servers that interfere with the legitimate DHCP server and cause IP conflicts or invalid addresses.

In MacOS Go to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Network. Select your active network connection (Ethernet or Wi-Fi). Click on "Advanced" and then go to the "TCP/IP" tab. The IP address listed there is usually assigned by DHCP

Usually for windows Open Command Prompt. Type ipconfig and press Enter. Look for the line that says "IPv4 Address" under the network adapter you are connected to. The IP address mentioned there is typically assigned by DHCP

IP DHCP issues may result in a variety of errors, such as IP conflict, invalid address, and DHCP server failure.
