In South Africa, while largely market-based, government intervention is notable in sectors like energy and transport. This hybrid approach mirrors many emerging economies balancing growth with equity. Contrarily, most developed nations lean more towards market dynamics but with some state intervention. South Africa's blend, reflecting its unique history and challenges, showcases the spectrum of global economic models, highlighting that no system is purely one or the other.

Today the market economy is also considered the mainstream economy, especially in the absence of a successful controlled or mixed economic systems. Of course there are some exceptions, but these exceptions cannot be copied elsewhere due to their unique nature.. market economy in that sense should not be described as “free” as market mechanisms are intrinsically distorted

Due to the impact of technological progress on the growth of economic activity, many countries have turned to a market-oriented economic system in the hope that they can achieve a higher level of prosperity by increasing national income. Historical experience shows that the market economy has strengthened political convergence and economic cooperation between countries, but the risk of market failure due to internal (poverty and inequality) and external (environmental problems) constraints must be taken seriously. The market lacks an automatic adjustment mechanism in difficult and critical situations. Every market needs a good and strong government to create a balance between economic and political values.

While there are several criticisms to the command economy, there are also several advantages too - low or non-existent unemployment, speed in decision-making, equality amongst citizens, and a focus on the worker as opposed to profits. China is a prime example of a command economy.

In my experience, while the government did regulate production in the Soviet Union, a specific price mechanism existed in its command economy. Producers calculated production costs, and the government specified the allowable profit margin to be included in the price. Despite an unemployment rate near zero percent, as production was planned based on norms, the lack of self-interest among workers/producers resulted in significant resource wastage. Additionally, consumers were uninterested in purchasing unappealing items, leading to long lines or bribery for imported goods. Decision-making was a lengthy process, hindered by bureaucracy and the need to coordinate numerous government agencies, where someone's mistake could lead to deficits.

A command economy may suffer from maldistribution due to the absence of adequate monitoring mechanisms. Autocrats are inclined to support a group and deprive other groups and consequently lead to maldistribution.

A command economy centralizes control for equitable distribution but can lack efficiency and innovation. Government dictates production and prices, limiting consumer choice. It aims to reduce income inequality but may stifle individual initiative. Balancing economic goals with individual freedoms is a key challenge.

As l mentioned here before we need some thing in between, neither completely free or market economy nor fully commanded economy.Private ownership of resources must be allowed together with publicly ownership of sort of property &resources. Some sort of government intervention is a must in some areas of big utility. Social welfare ....

Mixed economies are probably the best by enabling the government to intervene in times of crisis. I don't know of any shortcoming of a mixed economy except it may divert resources into managing alternate systems and scenarios. Parallel order may lead to duplication and increases in cost. On the positive side mixed economy may lead to competition between the private and the public sector. Competition is supposed to produce efficiency. Products and services in a mixed economy will be available to the customer/end user at a competitive price and quality.

A mixed economy could be the right solution because it does not entirely rely on a free market; there is still control by the government. In a mixed economic system, most economic activities are regulated by the market and market forces, while the government maintains a role in overseeing, regulating, and engaging in specific economic sectors. This approach allows for economic freedom for innovation and the growth of the private sector, while also providing a foundation for government intervention in terms of consumer protection, fair income distribution, and infrastructure development. The mixed economy aims to combine the advantages of both free-market and government control systems, with the hope of achieving an optimal balance.

Most major economies are either command or mixed, as it is the extent of governmental intervention or control that is in question. Command economies operate like a giant holding company. Yes, focused resources can accelerate growth. But as time progresses, protecting existing firms and people come at the expense of killing firms with disruptive processes that cannibalize existing firm’s PP&E, and human capital needs. As growth rates slow, the fall from grace can be dramatic. Mixed economies beware, as the same dangers lurk when governments flirt with Godliness, seeking to control resources through regulation, taxation, & tariffs. This discourages innovation needed to create growth companies and industries, leading to the same result.

I strongly agre6&encourage the adoption of mixed economy because it is moderate and proved its success in nowadays time.Also we have to adopt and apply real economy (assets-based or backed economy)in stead of monetary based economy.The lessons learned from the financial crisis 2008and own proved this statement.

Alternate economy is probably applicable in smaller settings and is not probably the best way to manage national economies. In the future with the fragmentation of the existing international system the possibility of introducing alternate economies on a small scale or within certain coalitions or groups may be workable.

Who decides what to produce in whose interest: no one considered economies created by colonialism and imperialism to shape production to the needs of the metropole, and consumption based on imports from the metropole. While we are in a post colonial era, the structures of production, export, and import largely remains intact in the Caribbean for instance. We produce commodities in some countries (Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Jamaica) and tourism services (the rest of the Caribbean) so that the vast majority of production is exported, and we import our consumables. Over 85% of food is imported extra-regionally. So, what kind of economy is this? Dependency economy?
