It is always about understanding the business first. What does the client want to achieve and what business strategies do they want to employ. If you don't understand this, its impossible to determine if existing infrastructure is suitable to support those demands or where to focus the improvements.

Understanding the client's core operations, daily processes, and future aspirations, you can assess how well their current technology infrastructure supports them. This reveals misalignments where technology might be hindering efficiency or failing to adapt to growth plans. Business processes can highlight areas where technology creates bottlenecks. For example, a sales team struggling to manage customer data in outdated software points to a need for a CRM system. Understanding the client's business priorities allows you to prioritize technology improvements. For instance, a company focusing on cybersecurity might value firewalls and data encryption more than a company focused on remote collaboration tools.

Documentation can be reviewed in order to find weak areas in the technology infrastructure of a client. This documentation may include: architecture system diagrams, topology network maps, software configurations and security policies. Studying documents makes it possible to have a notion not only of what a client's present-day technology environment is but also of possible deficiencies and fragility, areas of improvement required. With a health sector client - the IT documentation review showed that the versions of software in use were outdated, the organization of network security was poor, and the efficiency of data storage left much to be desired.

Fully agree on the documentation review for a level set. It’s critically important to engage your business stakeholders to understand if the current technologies is in alignment and supporting their goals and needs as well. Those conversations will be highly insightful to identify opportunities to elevate both business and IT practices and strategically plan for improvements and investments.

Network documents should include any information that helps administrators and IT professionals to keep the network up and running smoothly. What matters most is that the information is easily accessible and can be understood by all who need to refer to it.

I agree reviewing documentation can get you a clear picture of the current infrastructure posture and IT operation as a whole. By reviewing the documentation you will also be able to identify if things have been documented properly if they match current system or do things need to be updated. This also includes departmental processes and procedures.

In my experience this has been something that I feel should be last. I like to work directly with the IT staff internally. Then speak with other department leaders and stakeholders to get the outside service perspective. I find that sometimes this is mis aligned because of the gap in understanding IT services and operational standards. Most organizations do not have a C level IT leader. And this proves to be a challenge in some organizations. By reviewing IT operations and working directly with current IT leadership or staff and experienced IT Consultant will be able to quickly identify improvements and gaps fairly easily.

Some of the key things when presenting any recommendations is to understand your audience: 1. If you're dealing with the Middle Management then their focus will be more likely Close to ground. For e.g. how what you are suggesting will impact daily lives. 2. If you are working with top management then their focus likely will be how it will impact the overall company and its ops. 3. Tailor your content online with audience. 4. Engage. Presenting is an art. It's not reading whats on the slides. 5. Slides cannot have more that a few lines (3-5) 6. Presenting with conviction. What you're saying is really what you want and mean.

There are 3 key reasons I tend to consider as triggers for an upgrade or change in tech: 1. It's not working for end users and/or for the IT team supporting it. Whether it needs updating, reconfiguring or throwing out the window, if a platform is creating pain and work instead of reducing them, that's the biggest red flag 2. Security risks. If it's old, or been created with insufficient security & privacy considerations, even systems that appear functional may need changes. 3. End of life - no support and/or risk of failure can sneak up on people. Finally, there may have been market changes that might trigger a refresh with benefits in any/all of those categories. Change hurts, but when well managed it can indeed be as good as a holiday

One of the first areas would be running statistics on the database where you store hardware, software, and other infrastructure components and determine if they have aged to the point where they need to be replaced. Tracking and budgeting for this part of the infrastructure is Information Technologies responsibility. Failure to do so can result in infrastructure components breaking down and causing outages, poor response time and backlogs, and IT should monitor and report on those on a frequent basis. IT should also keep current with new hardware and software that will replace old and outdated infrastructure components. IT should also be very aware of the clients future direction and needs and plan accordingly.
