In my experience, I have felt that taking the time to listen, learn, and build a strong connection with the client allows for a more tailored and effective UX design proposal that truly addresses their unique challenges and aspirations. Also, i felt that if we holistically understand the end-user from a subject, object, and environment lens through asking questions, it builds more empathy and helps us to pitch better.

One of the biggest skills to learn is to “listen” to your clients and “understand their needs”. Often their needs and wants can be two different things, so as a designer I need to ask the right questions to fully understand their needs. It often comes as a surprise that wa t a client wants isn’t actually what they need.

Client centered storytelling Pitch your design as if you’re telling a story with the client as main characters. I believe the most important thing for the client is that we make them feel heard and that we are attentive to their preferences, ideas, wants, and needs to eventually earn their trust. Like in interior design, pitch it in a way that they are already inside the space. what do they like doing? What will the atmosphere feel like? What’s the scent like? Connect it with the client’s experiences backed by a solid portfolio showcasing your experiences as a designer. Through this, you will be able to highlight your strength as a listener, good communicator, and your expertise as a designer.

Let the client talk. Your job is to listen and ask leading questions that help clarify what they really need and discover what additional work they may not have even thought of. Dont offer up pricing or solutions on that first meeting- you need time to come up with a proper proposal that demonstrates you heard their problems and how you think you can solve them.

One practice which has helped me in every scenario - be it pitching our design or envisioning a strategy or communicating effectively is to first clearly articulate the problem from every lens and this happens better when we have deep dive and talked with our end users. This I achieve through jotting down everything on paper first and then map insights on digital tools like figma. That will create a common repo of our problem statement, pain points and insights to design better, pitch effectively and create an impact.
