We were about to fire him but decided to give him one last chance and appointed him project manager. In 3 months he turned into a different person. They are interested in exploring what they like or are passionate about. Diverse experience makes them versatile which helps their career. Startups should leverage this to their advantage. There are numerous examples from my experience where employee may be expert in something & very passionate about something else that they don’t have experience yet but are willing go extra mile. Employers providing them flexibility and opportunity to work on such meant everything to them and their career. After all, that sort of hunger is necessary for growth in general & profoundly required in startup.
As a GenZ Founder, the staff sometimes is my age or even older. Financial priorities are usually non-promary as they've willingly joined an early-stage startup. I've noticed the "WHY have you joined the startup" ends up with a perceived high future value of the startup, their reputation or both. It could also be their (high) level of relatability to the problem that the startup is trying to solve. In the prior case, we offer them opportunities to prove themselves to be that famous/reputed person they aspire to be -- representing the startup in conferences, events, communities, initiatives etc. For the latter, getting them involved deeply in product dev decisions makes them feel empowered and involved.

If you don't already have a person dedicated to career and leadership development, then you need to hire someone or bring in an outside partner. Majority of start-ups fail for two reasons: people issues and money issues. And most of the time it's BOTH. Invest meaningfully in the development of your people EARLY and OFTEN. It's easy to cut L&D type budgets when times get tough. But not supporting your people consistently will have negative consequences down the line. People will feel neglected and lack the motivation to keep weathering storms when they don't feel like they are valued and taken care of. Regardless of what learning initiatives you incorporate, you need to have dedicated resources for it. And not compromise on it.
