How can you help young adults create a strong resume?

Resume is your 1st impression and has to be well written, formatted and edited to the best industry practices. -add a summary-highlight of skills- education-professional experience -add skill specific content and make it relevant to the JD -focus on keywords and add full sentences -consult with an experienced industry professional for resume review and take their recommendations. Resumes are downloaded more than 3 times and seen by 3+ different senior teams analyzing the decision to interview. Make sure it's worth a read and impressive. Keep updating your resume with every new experience and skills learnt. Be proud of your accomplishments and value your dedication.

As an L&D expert, I highly recommend young candidates engage in self-evaluation assessments focusing on behavioral attributes and personality evaluations. These assessments provide invaluable insights into their strengths and talents, aiding in the creation of tailored CVs that highlight their unique attributes. Additionally, emphasizing participation in certified programs, forums, or courses relevant to their field of interest showcases proactive learning and skill development. This proactive approach not only enhances technical knowledge but also demonstrates a commitment to staying updated in the domain, making their CVs more impactful and targeted for different roles.

Audience is quite hard win over! One should tailor to needs by understanding language, customising for each job, and using industry-specific terms. Why? This ensures your resume aligns with the expectations. How? Research the industry, highlight relevant experiences, and speak their language. AI is also a key here. Result? An impactful resume that speaks to hiring managers.

Give them an opportunity to gain experience no matter what the position may be. The ones that accept that opportunity starting in at entry level will shine and make someone of themselves. The ones that want to start at the top usually fail. By working your way up in a company you gain a strong resume.

Creating a strong resume is critical and necessary. My advice is for honesty in the resume. Please do not put in 'leading an initiative and achieving...' if you are not the lead or this is a team effort. Truth is, the hiring manager will ask about the success and your answers may not be aligned to what you put in the resume. Perhaps it is better to put as "I was part of a team which focused on.... " The hiring manager may then ask about your role and the conversation would be far better during the interview. It's very important to research the company and the industry and use some of these information in the resume as well. Many things may have different terms for different companies and you may have done something similar. Cheers.

Be personal. Ask yourself what skills, values and qualities would you bring to the organisation. Give examples too with dates to evidence your statements for this is an extension of your elevator pitch.

Don't just blindly follow a "format" procured from any colleague or any known person. The CV should be unique and should be "compelling" enough for a potential employer to shortlist you for a possible position. Try to make "multiple" drafts before finalising the final draft CV taking into consideration your strengths, your weaknesses and the nature of position for which you may be applying in near future. Your strengths should be "highlighted" to the "maximum" in the final draft of the CV. However, keep the language of the CV to be "professional" always. Remember: The CV must do justice to all your achievements till date.

If this is a first time a resume is being assembled, I would suggest starting first with a bullet-pointed listing of what you've accomplished, previous employment and role, etc. Once those are listed from most recent to least, go back and think about what skills were acquired from each experience. Use action words, such as "Led xx initiative", or "Coached xx principle" (that's the 'what'), then give a very brief description of the results that came from the action. For example, "Coached peers on handling conflict effectively. As a result, complaints to HR were reduced by 32%." Keep these brief and to the point and be careful to keep the experience relevant. Once you have the content, then keep the formatting clean and easy to read.

Recruiters ask you to highlight results rather than activities. I beg to differ. Reading through a document that repeats "Accomplished this by doing that as measured by a third thing" ad nauseam, makes you feel.. well nauseous. Talk (briefly) about your passion and how that matches with the job. Talk about about things that cannot be captured in numbers - your sense of fulfillment, the respect of your peers, the confidence of your boss. Tell stories when you can. Of course never forget that "Brevity is the soul of wit."

Employers love to see results of your efforts. Rather than just list the experience, show the improvements or wins that occurred. As a younger professional, you may feel like you’re short on things like this. I encourage you to use a wider lens. What results have you received in former positions, volunteer efforts, school, side businesses, etc. that directly relate to what the company is looking for? Use them!

The average recruiter will look at your resume for 4-6 seconds. *Use a standard format, Sans Serif fonts, and bullet points to make the resume easy to read. *keep your resume direct and to the point. Limit flowery language, paragraphs, etc. *Ensure you put the most important information at the top of the resume. Early in your career, that may be your education. As you get more experience you may want to feature your accomplishments first. *Do not spend precious space on describing the company you worked for. You can always include a hyperlink to the company website or company LinkedIn profile. *Include your LinkedIn profile with your phone number and email.

Try to avoid blocks of text on a resume. There will be points where you want to convey more details than just bullet points, but remember that this is a SUMMARY of your work history and skills. Make it easy to see what is important. Recruiters/managers do not want to spend all day reading resumes and WILL trash them if they are too word-y.

I agree that good writing is a must. I will excuse a typo in a resume, but not bad grammar and usage. In positions for which I interview candidates, some of the writing they will do becomes permanent record. The resume illustrates that the candidate has what it takes. Ditto for the interview: know when and how to use nominative (subject) and objective pronouns! If you don’t speak correctly when trying to make a good first impression, I don’t have confidence that you will communicate professionally in the role in our organization.

Grammer is important, it shows you spent time and applied effort to this task. Make sure your language is clear and to the point. Hiring managers have allot of resumes to review. Having others proof read your resume is important. Several viewpoints, different perspective is valuable. Take your time to make sure each word is chosen wisely and the flow of the language is smooth.

In my experience as a hiring manager, your resume is your first impression. It should be a single page highlighting your skills, experience, education and licenses or certifications. There should not be any mistakes. Make sure it is formatted and saved as a PDF file. Let me reiterate, there should not be any mistakes.

Spell check to catch obvious errors. Read through slowly as you are reading someone else's resume to catch any incorrect data, mistakes etc. Remember spell check will not pick up any of the below (all lifted from real resumes): Revolved customer problems and inquiries. Consistently tanked as top sales producer for new accounts. Planned new corporate facility at $3 million over budget. Seeking a party-time position with potential for advancement. Working part time as a Marital Arts Instructor. Have a second or third set of eyes go over it to catch things you might be blind to or to offer a different perspective.

Get used to consistently keeping your LinkedIn updated as you update your version of your resume that is distributed in selection processes. Maintaining this organization with checklists and an update schedule may seem trivial, but it makes a difference, as experienced recruiters tend to compare the two versions of your story. And on LinkedIn you are openly selling your resume.

Start by updating your LinkedIn profile with job changes, new experiences, or new skills. Sections of a LinkedIn profile are easy to update, read, and navigate. ? Then you can copy and paste the same new info to Word, Canva, or your preferred resume software!??

It's important to keep your resume recent. Every job is unique and requires a set of roles and responsibilities, therefore update your resume according to the job that your are applying. Highlight your skills and expertise according to the job requirement. Importantly, be honest. Express your interests and even add what you are currently working on for an example, attending baking classes to sharpen your baking skills. This could be included in your interest section. If there is no such section, be bold and create one in your resume. Employers will respect your honesty and appreciate your enthusiasm to keep learning.

You do not have to update your resume file every other week. Keep a notebook (or a note in your phone's app) and just jot down achievements you've earned and projects / tasks you've accomplished as you do them. Then you can update your resume every couple of months. If you have your resume uploaded to several websites (like LinkedIn), you can also keep a text document next to where you have your resume saved to remember where you need to upload the new version.

Either way it’s just a piece of paper describing your accomplishments, attributes, skills, aspirations, and experience, etc. Resumes are important, but they don’t always get people hired. Until we have AI CEO’s, AI Executives, and AI Leaders running companies, people hire people. Therefore it’s often who you know, and not what’s on your resume. A strong resume can help get job seekers noticed and invited for an interview, but networking will help a job seeker get hired and succeed in their career. In this world you need both, a strong resume and an impressive network of people who can advocate, provide contacts, referrals, and endorsements.

Ask for letter of recommendations from your respective supervisors While many young people may face the issue that you do not have an extensive list of experience, it will help a lot if you are able to collect one or two valuable recommendations coming from your supervisors or senior leaders, ideally if the persons are well respected in your industry. Ask for their permission to include their name in your reference list which might enhance your overall quality of your resume.
