How can you help team members advance their careers?

As a coach, my primary goal is to support and empower team members in advancing their careers. Here are some ways I can help team members achieve their career goals: Networking and Mentoring: Facilitate networking, connect with mentors, and offer guidance. Promoting Visibility: Showcase achievements, encourage leadership opportunities, and project involvement. Career Coaching and Guidance: Offer one-on-one coaching for decision-making and overcoming challenges. Individual Development Plans (IDPs): Create personalized plans aligning strengths, weaknesses, and career aspirations. Skills Assessment and Training: Identify skill gaps and implement targeted training programs.

Discuss, discuss and discuss. Sit down with your team and chat about their strengths, their goals and what makes them feel alive at work. Identify development gaps and give feedback on how their can close this gap to help them grow. Encourage mentoring and job shadowing - Establish a formal mentoring program or encourage them to shadow someone to help them learn from more experienced colleagues. Empowerment - Get them to come up with their own career development plans and provide them with advice and resources to help them achieve their goals.

When mentoring employees I always start with their goals, strengths and weaknesses. I give feedback on my observations and often find their perceived weaknesses are just that; perceived. We pick a couple to work on and put items to action so we can assess what worked and what did not. In addition, we work on cross-collaboration in an effort to get them networking and exposure to leaders they may not normally interact with. In more than one instance I’ve had employees actually leave the company, on good terms, as they gained the confidence and clarity to seek their value and true passion.

Career Development means we develop ourselves for the next potential career. Start from self-awareness. Do we know what's our personality? If we do not, it's very hard to know what should we do to achieve it. Perhaps an easy reference to DISC Personality model. It's NOT just the D personality who can be a good leader. As someone with C personality, if we are aware of our personality, we would know that we have to start to also accept that sometimes the organisation may be transforming very fast and flexibility to adapt to changes would be key versus always having a step by step process to guide us. if we are aware, we could adapt. We will have less stress too. That's how we develop ourselves to be ready for the next career potential.

1. Establish Clear Career Goals: Initiate discussions with team members about their career aspirations. Help them define clear short-term and long-term goals. 2. Provide Constructive Feedback: Offer regular and constructive feedback on their performance. Highlight their strengths and provide guidance on areas where improvement is needed. 3. Promote Skill Development: Support team members in acquiring new skills relevant to their roles and career aspirations.

I once had a team member as part of my team who had different strengths who was also not really keen to work in the responsibilities which came to him as part of my team. I knew he would struggle and I also knew that he would not be having full interest in completing those responsibilities. I spoke with him and had a very honest candid chat. I realised that his interest was in a diverse role in other department and I recommended his name to one of my colleague who was apparently also looking for similar expertise. Since the day he moved to that role, he is been extremely happy doing the kind of work which he is doing now and he's also thankful to me for giving him that opportunity.

In my leadership experience, I've discovered that empowering your team to operate autonomously can yield remarkable results. While I provide guidance, I consciously refrain from micromanaging. I encourage team members to leverage their unique talents and strengths within their designated areas, fostering an environment where they can learn from each other, particularly in areas of weakness. Open communication is paramount, with regular feedback sessions and frequent team appraisals. During these reviews, we assess our goals and, if necessary, collaboratively set new ones.

In my experience it’s good to encourage your staff to take additional training or certifications to help them reach their goals. Sometimes employees wait for these opportunities to be offered to them then to reach out and ask.

Após algumas conversas para entendermos esse novo interesse, buscamos formas de trazer análise de dados diretamente do datalake da organiza??o para apresentarmos relatórios e dashboards gerenciais dentro da plataforma. Tanto a empresa ganhou, como o desenvolvedor que pode trabalhar com o que era de seu interesse. Algumas vezes n?o é possível conciliar os interesses e necessidades. é preciso maturidade para entender que é hora de seguir novos ares.

Every person who ever worked for me has heard this directive. "Always keep learning. Every day, work to learn something new. I want you to excel here in your job. But foremost, I want you to excel in life. You might get promoted here and stay around, or you might find an opportunity in another company. Either way, I support your growth."

Providing your team with resources and guidance is essential for their success and growth. Offer training sessions or workshops to enhance skills relevant to their roles or projects. Consider both technical and soft skills development.

A good start would be asking about their WHY. What do you want and why do you want it? If you’re going to do it right, there has to be an ongoing, purposeful conversation that builds momentum and draws from experience on both sides, personal and professional.

In my management experience, I employ a straightforward approach by asking three essential questions and ensuring adequate support for my team: 1. What didn't work? 2. What worked? 3. What do you need to excel in the future?

To add to this, the resources offered must be tailored to each individual's career path and learning style. For example, some team members might benefit more from hands-on workshops, while others might prefer online courses or self-paced learning modules. I like to find industry-leading resources. Not just items you find on Udemy but go above and beyond to upskill those who are yearning to learn.

Encourage, guide and support your team members. Make them realize that learning never stops and it can help them in their personal career growth while it also contributes to the team’s strengths and growth. Team members may not know where to focus and that’s where you can guide them to take the right step in the right direction. Be selfless while promoting team members to take up learning opportunities as they may not always align with the team goals but it might be needed taking the team members aspirations into consideration .

In my experience we don’t provide people with enough opportunities to learn within their roles in other projects. Allowing them to try new areas, new skills, meet new people and enhance their knowledge by just talking to people that think differently because of their backgrounds. We need to invest in providing more of those opportunities

Provide guidance and encouragement as they navigate new challenges and opportunities. As a leader, you have the power to inspire and empower your team to explore and experiment, pushing the boundaries of their skills and capabilities. Another key factor is providing regular feedback and support. This means offering constructive criticism, recognizing and rewarding good work, and providing support when team members encounter roadblocks or setbacks.

In my experience as a coach, I have seen leaders that excel at creating a safe environment for the members of their team to consistently experiment with new ideas as well as support them through failures. If you can create a culture of trust and safety that allows the members of your team to explore new ideas knowing that they might fail it will inspire greatness in coming up with new ways to approach situations that can elevate not only their performance, but that of the organization as a whole. Focus on holding discussions with a positive mindset with questions such as what new ideas did you explore this month? What did you learn from your experimentation? How can I support you moving forward? Failures will happen. Grow and learn.

Encouraging unlimited thinking triggers exploration so I like to get my team thinking outside of the box, beyond their current role, level or company. They hesitate at the beginning but I support them in setting small goals/steps that are achievable to get to what seems impossible at first

Individual can be developed when they are provided free mental approach, where they can take actions and can learn from their failure. Support and guide them but let them make decision, in this case their failure become their learning and learning become experience.

I think as individuals we can insofar try to guide others in making their decisions, by offering our opinions. At the end of the day, consider the pros and cons and don’t be dismissive of their opinions. Rather be non biased and give your opinion. Further, implore that at the end of the day, they have to take responsibility of their actions, because it’s through their own decisions that they will reap their rewards in future.

Guide the team while allowing autonomy in decision-making. Empower them to use the resources provided to solve problems and make decisions. When something doesn't work out well, help the team to understand the reasons. They will learn and make it better.

It's surprising how many individuals have never been empowered to make decisions. Knowing your team's strengths and weaknesses is essential to growth. Setting parameters for decisionmaking provides confidence and advances the entire organization from frontline staff to seasoned managers. Will mistakes occur? Of course! But use these as learning moments instead of penalizing...

Empowering is crucial. You want to make them in charge of their results and accountable for them. Leading this way will help them learn from their actions.

One thing I have found helpful is to set time consistently throughout the year to review and revise their priority areas of growth. All too often, we get excited when the new year is approaching to set new goals and then after February or March we lose focus as they begin to fade away due to the day to day requirements of work. Take a stand so that you can communicate to the members of your team that this is a priority in creating new behaviors, set a cadence quarterly, and commit the time needed to not just "check-in" but review progress, provide support, and witness the results as the members of your team develop throughout the year accomplishing great results that contribute to the teams overall performance.

Helping your team know there own goals, which can often be accomplished simply by asking them their goals, is so important! If they don't know their goals, they can't share them with you. The value and importance of you knowing their goals cannot be overstated because aligning their role in your organization with their goals creates symbiotic success that can cycle I to high retention and performance.

El 58% de ventas se pierde por falta de seguimiento. Con este ejemplo vemos la importancia del seguimiento, es IMPRESCINDIBLE... desde mi punto de vista, siempre acompa?ando, apuntalando la sugerencia y no la exigencia ( ?quien sabe sobre ese tema más que tu propio equipo? )... tu estás para acompa?ar en ese logro a conseguir la meta final. Hasta llegar a esa meta se marcarán esos peque?os objetivos intermedios para poder llegar a conseguir esa meta. Cada vez que revisemos esos objetivos intermedios, tan necesarios, podremos ver que necesita el equipo, que acciones deben tomar para llegar a conseguir el objetivo final (META). No hay nada que motive más a un equipo que ellos mismos tengan esa capacidad de elección, así consigues compromiso.

Metas s?o fundamentais dentro de um plano de a??o estruturado. Sem metas, n?o é possível saber de onde estamos para onde vamos, n?o é possível estabelecer um processo de feedback construtivo e estruturado e, mais que isso, n?o é sequer possível analisar o progresso das a??es. Mentoria sem plano de a??o é conversa, bate-papo, uma boa inten??o.

To create a healthy culture for learning and growth. Of all the years that I’ve worked, I have come to a point that a sustainable way for both the companies or individuals could only advance their development is to create a healthy culture for learning and growth. That said, you need to ensure that the skill assessments are being carried amongst all members of the team, to provide your team with regular trainings, to create a habit of exchanging the job knowledge and opportunities for growth. Consistency is key here as we are talking about to create a culture. Look your calendar for a bi-weekly training, allocate 15 mins per day with the team to chat on what are some of the new knowledge to be acquired and so on.

Before considering how to help a team member advance their career there needs to be a deeper conversation; what does advancement mean to them? How do they want to proceed? Do they want this help at all? Now more than ever, careers are diversifying and what’s important to one person may be irrelevant to another. Consider whether advancing is your agenda or theirs. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with sticking where you are if it’s the right role for you!

Many companies don’t have the agility to provide fast progressions or promotions for all the rising stars. Exposure to responsibilities well above the current job role provides opportunities for team members to prove their potential and be visible to company leadership. This includes internal presentations, workshops and smaller company projects as well as client-facing tasks that can be implemented under guidance and supervision. A great team leader does not wait for the team to “be ready” but rather coaches and exposes them to learning opportunities that advance their readiness faster than the regular role and expected tasks. The debrief and subsequent one on one coaching can then help to fine tune and hone the demonstrated skills!

I believe the most important and sometimes overlooked step in the process is to have a meaningful conversation to understand what someone wants out of their career. Early on, I assumed everyone wanted to grow as fast in their career as possible and eventually become a senior executive. This is certainly not the case and a good thing for the organization. If everyone wanted to be the CEO, then who are going to be the individual contributors, line managers, and middle managers? Understanding what that employee desires out of their career will help define all of the other steps around skill building, positioning for advancement and growth, etc. This way you are meeting the employees desires and expectations.

Understanding your team members true future aspirations is essential - not just their first promotional step. Where do they want to land? Why? What is their dream - inside the company or out. Once you understand your team members deeper intentions, you can help them develop their own path to get there, and the assistance you can provide along the way.
