How can you help someone prepare for an interview when transitioning to a new career?

One piece of advice I always give people who are transitioning careers is to sit down with someone who's doing a similar job to what they're interviewing for and ask them, in their opinion, what are the main skills required for the role and what are the complimentary skills. There're always transferable knowledge between what you do at the moment and what you want to move into. If you work in Finance but want to move to HR, your ability to work with numbers would make you a great fit for a role in total rewards.

During your upcoming interview, be sure to highlight your ability to adapt by sharing specific examples of times when you successfully navigated unexpected adjustments. Whether it was acclimating to a new boss, embracing changes in your job description, or quickly solving problems on the go – these moments showcase your resilience and ability to thrive amidst uncertainty. Know that your adaptability will enable you to seamlessly integrate into any new team you join.

I think the best way to help is by practicing interviews together. Start by compiling a list of frequently asked questions and then practice. Provide continuous feedback on what's going well and what could be improved. I would also advise them to create a portfolio. Portfolio? Additionally, you can provide feedback here as well.

We understand that some candidates may have gaps in their employment history, either intentionally or unintentionally. Our top priority is to help these candidates find suitable job opportunities. Firstly, one must boost the confidence of such candidates. Encourage them to read up and research the latest changes in the desired field, and to highlight core skills during the interview. Some companies look for candidates based on their abilities, even if they don't fully meet the job requirements. Additionally, you can suggest preparing for commonly asked questions and being more interactive during the interview, as this can increase their chances of securing a job and help interviewers overlook the employment gap.

I can speak from personal experience when it comes to transferable skills, having switched from recruiting to sales. Although it was out of necessity, I enjoyed uncovering this pattern and applying it. I had to take a step back and look at the main skills I used in recruiting: active listening skills, negotiations, strong verbal communication, the ability to read verbal and physical cues during conversation, activity driven results, creative outreach and candidate care. You have to look at the specific tasks you're completing throughout the day and think about the skills you need and use to get them done. Once you break it down you can start to think about how they can relate to other career paths. That led me to sales.

Informational interviews are a critical step in this process, as is researching employers of interest to ensure that the work culture is one that supports the growth and ongoing success of their employees.

I think the absolute best way to research and learn more about a specific career is to interview/chat with people who are in the same career. Online researching can be of great value, but for you to know what a career/job is all about you need to speak with someone who's doing the same thing. Ask them about their daily tasks, challenges, best and worst thing about their job, career progression and how it looks like, and share with them your thoughts about the role. You can learn so much about the career that way and therefore make a much better decision.

One of the most powerful tools is the informational interview. In coaching fellow military veterans and spouses transitioning out of service, this tool was invaluable to most of my clients. This helped them in numerous ways. ? Able to research industries and companies to see if it is right for them. ? Build a network targeted to desired industries and companies. ? Able to rehearse interview-type questions and discussion. ? Learn how their skills and training can transfer to a new career ? Learn the vernacular and jargon of the new industry or company. ? Practice one’s value proposition or “elevator pitch.” ? Generate leads to other opportunities or network contacts. ? Become a known person with insiders.

Having measured expectations for a role and business leveling is critical. One attribute all technology companies assess for is business acumen. Understanding the fundamentals of a business, organization, revenue model and only applying to right sized roles can manage expectations and keep candidates from getting discouraged along the way.

First, I will help the candidate understand the competency/behavioral questions asked by the interviewers during the job interview process. Second, I will assist the job candidate in preparing a compelling story for the Top ten (10) most popular competency-based questions relating to their experience. By aiding the applicant to prepare competencies to answer around: Teamwork; Working under pressure; Using the initiative to problem solve; Leadership and Management; Customer Service; Conflict Management and Project Management. By thinking of which competency/behavior from their experience or story the Employer will make an inference. Finally, I will remind the candidate to let their personality shine by being confident.

Mock interviews and doing proper research about the organisation can make a significant difference. While going through the mock interviews be specific about the answers, give examples while explaining and always ask for feedback

An interview is a two-way process that not only allows employers to assess candidates, but also is a way for candidates to assess if this is a role they’d like to take, and an employer with whom they’d like to work. Given this, in addition to understanding how to answer interview questions, I coach my clients to prepare their own questions. The goal is to gather enough information so that they can feel confident in their decision to accept or reject the offer if one is extended to them.

Interviewing is a muscle. "STAR" method is vital for communicating information clearly, succinctly. Situation - What were you solving for? Task - What did you need to do? Action- What did you decide on? Result - What was the outcome? Great interviewers and people who pivot industries harness the power of storytelling.

You don't know what you don't know, so it's important to take a step back and truly assess yourself and your situation as you move into new roles. Completing self-assessments can be helpful. Better yet, working with a coach to complete a normative assessment is an excellent way to not only identity any gaps but strategies on changing behaviors, becoming aware of how to use those behaviors or perspectives to your advantage, or even planning how to explain any perceived gaps that others may see in you. The bottom line here is to not simply take swift action without having as much objective data as possible. This will help you to avoid landing in the same spot even with a new role.

Your interviewer may ask why the career change, which could lead to a discussion on skillset gaps. Knowing what you don't know here is key, as is owning that lack of experience. Having a clear, passionate reason for your career transition will resonate and differentiate you from others.

Another way of thinking about this; is what you can add given that you are from a different career line? Perhaps you have experiences or qualifications that would not be the norm in that route that you can use as an advantage?

Reconocer los gaps, debilidades o grandes retos siempre se debe traer al diálogo, aventarlo debajo de la alfombra sólo hará que te cause ansiedad abordar el tema y eso lo transmitirás en la entrevista. The real focus has to be on your achievements, where you’ve made a difference, when you’ve gone the extra mile and why, what was the problem that you solved, or changed or influenced a new way of working, what did it result in and do you have any stats or data to back it up, and what did you learn or what would you do differently next time. Making it clear that you have the right skillset and experience is obviously important but in interview, it’s about building a rapport quickly and talking with confidence about how and why you made a difference. Confidence comes from being proud of your achievements, having a solid structure.. (I teach CARL), and practicing your answers.

Research the New Industry and Role: I can provide information about the industry, its trends, key players, and the role you're targeting. I can suggest resources like books, websites, and industry reports for further research. Understand Transferable Skills: I can help you identify and articulate transferable skills from your previous career that are relevant to the new role. I can provide examples of how to reframe your past experiences to align with the new career.

Transitioning careers requires resilience and a growth mindset. Encourage positivity, continuous learning, and excitement for a change! Staying in a positive and excited mindset will naturally boost confidence- and confident folks interview better (and have more fun along the way!).

This is one of the keys to succeeding in an interview during a transition. The reason is that insecurity or lack of confidence can impact the communication. When supporting someone through this transition, it's important to emphasize this message: "Making a career change is not a reason to be ashamed. Embrace your decision and use your previous experience as a boost, not as a blocker."

Before interview have a good sleep. Review the location and time of reciving. Be motiviate in bahaviour and formal in your cloths. Speak and answer right to the point. Just answer the question of interviewer. Control the time and ask your question at the end of interview.

An interview starts before the actual time of the interview. Start by researching the interviewers, learn more about them and what they do. Then of course research the company itself if you haven't already did. It always helps when you go into an interview knowing a little bit about everyone. Considering that most interviews are done virtually nowadays, make sure you're at a quiet place with no distractions and make sure your audio/visuals are working fine (testing them is preferred). You can write notes of what you want to talk about but never memorize full sentences. Being your true self is very important and interviewers can see write through you if you're repeating a memorized script.

In my experience, preparation for the interview is key. I usually conduct research on the organization, especially the structure of the organization and on the interviewers. I then sit down and prepare a list of key points and achievements I want to put forward at all costs during the interview. This really helps orient the questions in the direction you prefer. Whatever the question you are asked, always try to put forward these key achievements. Finally, I always prepare a few questions to ask recruiters at the end, who show interest in their careers and opinions. Trust me, recruiters like talking about themselves.

If the stat '75% of all hiring decisions are made in the first 5 minutes of a meeting' is correct ( first impressions are critical) then you'd better script and practise your answer to the following opening question: Why don't you start us off by telling us a little about you? But how? Relate your answer to you, your experience and why your there. More difficult than it sounds and takes some thought but remember, your selling you! 2 or 3 short sentences, war and peace is nor required. The idea is to plant seeds and control the direction, content and pace of the discussion. If you've done this well, you'll control the narrative for the next 20 minutes which you'll be comfortable with as your doing the driving.. first impressions!

First impressions of the interviewee will set the tone for the interview. Interviewee should dress professionally (suit/tie for gentlemen and business suit for women) when seeking any type of professional position. Computer programmers and software engineers might dress differently but in the business world, it is expected. Hair and face should be groomed and neat. If you appear professional, the interviewer will assume the same about your work.

Show your passion! Since you don't have the experience in this new area, show your passion on why you want to change career into this new area. Tell the interviewer why you are very interested in this new career and what can you bring from your previous experience into the new company

I would also add. - Connecting the dots of the candidate’s previous lived and work experience to the direction of where they’re headed. When networking, candidates can demonstrate their skill through conversation. - Ensure their online presence is relevant. A refresh online profile can help connect the dots of their past with the direction of their future. People reading profiles want to get a sense of personality and whether they can ‘see’ how the candidate can fit in. - Create advocates and ambassadors. Who can talk on the candidate’s behalf? Having people in the candidates corner can help identify them for an opportunity, refer them, or share a lead, can also be a warm lead or warm introduction into a new industry.

I recently transitioned from advertising to PR as a creative strategist. While these are not worlds apart because communications principles are the same, it's still a move that's outside my comfort zone. For one, we speak a different language so a lot can get lost in translation. So my advice is to showcase your work ethic which now is harder to come by, transferable skills, and growth mindset --the sheer belief that you can literally learn anything you put your mind into because trust me, you can.

Bring these 3 things when going for an interview. 1) Energy Passion comes from energy. Endure your energy during the whole interview... Engage well with the hiring manager... 2)Authenticity... Never ever try to fake yourself. No one is perfect in this world. It is okay to admit for the skills that you don't acquire. Try to imagine, would you like to work with someone who is fake and jeopardize the whole team culture? Try to ponder. Just be yourself. 3) Magnetism Nothing much can be done for this. It is exactly how you go for dating. The only way to do on this part is to dress well, ask questions, have good sitting posture and etc... Just my 2 cents..

Present your uniqueness- One should know their strengths and uniqueness. And if one is confident that his or her strength can help the new organization by showing complete different perspectives - then you can win the game. As you will have a complete different view of looking at things as compared to person who is already from same profession- tell the interviewer what will you do differently that will benefit both parties.
