How can you help patients who experience delays in care?

I argue the first step is acknowledging the disruption of a delay in care and accepting ownership. Regardless of the cause and your role in the organization, you should acknowledge, accept, apologize, and offer your assistance. I tell patients, I can’t promise I can solve your issue, but I can promise I will what I can to help you, and if we reach a roadblock, I will find someone else who can help you further. Too often in patient care people see their role as “their job” and going beyond that is not their responsibility. Before you can identify the cause, recognize a person in need of help, and commit your assistance to them.

Caso o problema seja por parte do cliente - melhorar os meios de comunica??o para que este qdo precisar do servi?o - venha com o que é necessario para solu??o - quase que pronta

Algo que achei util foi Na minha experiência como usuário onde há atrasos no atendimento de profissionais da área da saúde, verifico que há uma espécie de culpa recíproca, onde um único paciente pode atrasar toda uma agenda de aproximadamente 8 a 10 pessoas.. O inverso é verdadeiro quando o profissional da área médica n?o acompanha sua agenda junto a secretária. Presenciei vários casos assim. uma ótima solu??o é o proprietário da empresa, no caso, o profissional da área de saúde ( médico/dentista/fisioterapeuta, etc) repassar a agenda do dia seguinte e durante o dia acompanhar junto a secretária como está o horário e manter-se dentro do combinado. N?o é bom sinal atrasos médicos.. na primeira oportunidade, paciente vai embora.

This issue has far reaching implications, well beyond the steps listed here. Although this is a good place to start, delays in care can be very complex. Consider the patient who has an undiagnosed rare disease. Now that same patient doesn’t speak the languages at their clinic, has unreliable transportation, and a family who doesn’t encourage visits to the doctor. The delay in care in this type of patient would be astronomical, if they ever did get care. When working with individual patients and their families, dig in to those social determinants of health as well as equity to health access. Patient advocacy has to start with reducing the delay of care as much as possible. It is often more than just one factor involved.

As a health professional, we often have the benefit of understanding how long things should take, what factors impact progress of treatment plans, and what is reasonable to expect of service providers - many of our clients may not have this same understanding. We can help advocate for our clients by helping them understand when a situation is not OK, then help them to speak-up through identifying the most effective channels to ensure action is taken. We can't just do it once though - often we'll need to follow-up and continue to assist the client to ensure the actions we have taken or suggested have actually worked.
