Receiving negative feedback from executives can be tough, but I've found it helpful to stay calm and really listen to what they're saying. If things are unclear, don't hesitate to ask for more details. Taking ownership of any areas that need improvement and proposing practical solutions is a proactive way to handle it. Instead of dwelling on blame, focus on working together to find solutions. Keep the communication open with follow-ups to show you're committed to making progress. Turning feedback into a tool for personal and professional growth has been a key takeaway for me. Do not be defensive...listen.

Now, it’s vital that you take your team on a journey, well in advance to f your performance review. Be intentional about how you deliver and receive feedback. People need encouragement and a clear path forward.

The most professional reactions I've seen include seeking clarification, summarising the main points to make sure I understand, and genuinely trying to understand my viewpoint and expectations. Remember, It Starts Months Before Check-in many times before the review. Months and weeks in advance, and get the feedback to work on. Don't wait until afterward; try to make your points for a better outcome. The other thing is to ensure you do your responsibilities to ensure you deserve what you get. Some of you try to be the model employee weeks before the entire process and think you deserve what you don't deserve. The evaluation will cover the entire time, not a few weeks before. Sometimes, your attitude around the responsibilities factors in. You must remember that a human being will likely give the review or sign off on it.

The old saying is, "Where there's smoke, there's fire." I adopted this early in my career. I wanted to know where I could improve, and if there was a hint of smoke (weakness), I wanted to put out that fire (doubt). Acknowledging feedback should be standard, but also look at it as a gift. Even if you disagree, look for the hints of truth in what was said. Work on improving and developing so that feedback is never repeated.

Signal hat you heard what was said. If it's nuanced, it helps to signal understanding by repeating in your words what was said. Be aware that it does not matter what happened. The leadership has this opinion for better or worse. What is important is how you react. If you signal a willingness to learn and improve, then all is well.

Get these goals in writing so that you can show you did what you were asked to do. Be sure that these measures do address the weaknesses outlined so that the solution matches the problem and that they are realistic for you.

To develop those leaders, the executive must be intentional. Give them the feedback plus the steps or actions to take in order to reverse that perception.

Executives Are People, Too As long as people have eyes and feelings, they will judge you somehow. No executive would admit this, especially in this day and age in this type of culture. Some executives believe in it; some have taken it too far by canceling people's careers. People still judge you, whether you are a man, a woman, young, or old. For example, if you are an older employee and lack a specific skills, an executive may assume you've been here the entire time and haven't gained that skill, which is not good for you. If you're young, they may perceive it as a lack of experience, which factors into your evaluation. While executives may not openly acknowledge this, I am telling you to remember that executives are people, too.

This perspective encourages employees to constantly seek learning opportunities, not just reactively during evaluations but proactively throughout their daily work. I received feedback on my contributions, sort of an evaluation from my connections or fellow LinkedIn members. One said they look forward to what I contribute as they learned just as much for them as they did in the classroom. They feel like it actually happened when they read it. The other thought I was too hard and rough. I would have to agree with both. I work amongst the nicest and cruelest people on this planet. I want as many people to be successful as possible. I have been in wars, gun fights, brawls, coups, etc. The most beautiful and dangerous places. I know everyone from the president to the warlord, from the godly to the wicked. I don't lie; I don't cheat, I don't steal, but to work where I work, you have to do everything else.

I suggest looking beyond traditional performance metrics in evaluations. Consider aspects like teamwork, creativity, leadership potential, and emotional intelligence. These are critical for long-term success and can often be overlooked in standard evaluations.

Considero que las retroalimentaciones se deben de dar de forma constante y paulatina, no al finalizar el a?o, deben de ser mínimos trimestrales o semestrales. Es una forma de ir creciendo con el colaborador. Para ello lo ideal es realizarla cara a cara (face to face) en un ambiente controlado y donde el colaborador se sienta cómodo de expresar su forma de pensar sin temor a represalia alguna. Debemos de tener una conversación transparente y efectiva con el colaborador, resaltando sus puntos de aporte así como los de mejora para incentivarlo a que él mismo haga su retrospectiva y establezca un plan de acción que le permita crecer como personal y como profesional.
