Steps to identify Key stakeholders for analysis: 1. Document review: Check & scrutinise project documents for key stakeholders. The main stakeholders can be identified through project charter, QA plan & risk mgt plan. 2. Organisational analysis: This can be done to identify who may impact/will be impacted during the project. 3. Social media handle: Another great way to know who are the 'voices' of the organisation. 4. SME: Seeking expert opinion especially if the organisation structure isn't understood. More pertinent when dealing with Govt agencies. 5. Previous projects: The knowledge repository is a fantastic library to compare & check notes from the past. Who knows, it may throw in a 'eureka' moment!

Stakeholders definitely can be more committed to Project Goals depending : -That you as a leader keep their benefit before yours . -Were you able to include them first hand when you were setting goals because seeking their perspective will help you in making the goals more practically aligned. -Were you able to hold them accountable and were you able to give them the clarity that they always wanted ? -How is this going to help them in their career and growth, because growth is an intrinsic need of every individual. -Power Yes give them the power to decide Give them freedom to take responsibiltiy. Do not micromanage them , once you have told them trust them Summing up all the pointers will help in making stakeholders committed.

In my experience you need to no be able to show from the beginning (in that initial pitch) how your proposal /project will support the achievement of their own goals. Essentially aligning your goals with them (corporate level and individual). What is in it for them and a clear “So what?” are the best ways to ensure stakeholders support for your goals / initiatives / projects.

Using SMART is old. It’s goal oriented. Simplify with Targets. It’s object oriented. Pick 1 thing, laser focus on it and define everything that you can in writing. A target. Set up the targets for people who can hit them. After the target gets hit, options become: 1. New target 2. bullseye refinement Set up targets with people to become a range-leader. Establish firing lanes for each of the people shooting for the center. Aim small, miss small. This wins. Or, use SMART - make it bigger and well defined. Aim big, miss big - so you’ll have to spend more time doing this instead of knocking down targets. Either works, mine has won in over 30 countries for thousands of leaders so if you want to try something new and proven. Target it.

In my experience over diverse projects, stakeholder engagement is a continuous & iterative process. The higher the frequency of stakeholder involvement, the lesser are the chances of project delays or budget going haywire. Depending on the size of your group and team, surveys, for a smaller team I find are rather ineffective. Brainstorming session tend to yield the best results and allows for “answers” beyond the limitation of the survey. One important aspect to remember to walk out with a properly documented and written report after the session. Documenting brainstorming session and publishing a report shared with those in attendance helps formalize such sessions and support future initiatives. Document the session, summarize and publish key findings and set some next steps based on the session. In short, come prepared and leave informed.

Once the hard calculations are out on the notepad, the softer aspect of negotiations become easier. In case of disagreements, one needs to seek a middle path because ultimately the team will need to work in unison. No one wants allocate their time and focus on a project and upon its completion, for that project to live in a vacuum: reviewing and evaluating outcomes gives the stakeholders insight, increases their involvement and hopefully gives actionable insights to improve the next slated project they are to be involved in.

You will always get the most engagement when a stakeholder understands exactly how a project will benefit them. Even if it’s something small, provide concrete examples of how the project will help a stakeholder personally and it will change their perspective.
