If you are working as a journalist already, use any opportunity to watch a good photographer at work. Look at not only the way they compose a photograph but especially at the way they communicate with the people they are photographing. This is both before they take the photo - in organising a group pose, or even a single pose - then the way they talk to the people getting them to look into the camera lens (then they will be looking out of the photo and straight at the reader) and the way they chat to people so they relax and look happy rather than like a startled rabbit caught in the headlights just as they press the shutter. Take 20 pictures of the same group of people then you have a half chance of getting one photo with good expressions.

I think that being a photojournalist is a lot of time part of parcel of being a journalist. Having the opportunity to take your own pictures and share the story through you eyes is a wonderful thing. Going to places where other writers may not be in attendance gives a boost in providing photos of events and happenings where coverage is limited and offers a chance for lesser known places to be profiled as long as you can place the story.

In answering this question I put in a caveat of is changing from a journalist to a photojournalist a "promotion"? Many of the world's top journalists are not photojournalists and would not consider it a promotion. These days, unfortunately, journalists are expected to do the jobs of a number of people - if you input copy onto a template that is published immediately you are doing the jobs of the sub-editor and editor and, in the old days, the page make-up people. I used to go out with a photographer and ask for the photos I wanted for my story. They were better at photos & I wrote better stories but I could take pictures if needed. If you want to be a photojournalist watch & learn from a good photographer then incorporate it into your job.

Consider using footage to do the talking instead of you as the journalist. Your video should tell a story from beginning to end.
