Examples of possible objectives include assessing the level of awareness, support, and engagement of your target audience; identifying the main issues, concerns, and motivations of your potential allies and opponents; testing and improving your messages, tactics, and materials; measuring the impact and outcomes of your actions and events; and learning from your successes and failures to plan your next steps.

2 Choose your methods

Gathering feedback from the community is an important part of understanding your goals, resources, and context. Surveys are a great way to collect quantitative and qualitative data from a large or representative sample of your audience. Interviews provide in-depth insights and stories from key stakeholders, leaders, or influencers. Focus groups are small group discussions with a diverse and relevant segment of your audience to explore their views, experiences, and preferences. Observations document the behavior, reactions, and interactions of your audience during your actions and events. Feedback forms can be used after participating in your actions and events to get feedback from your audience. All of these methods can be done remotely using tools like Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp, Google Forms, SurveyMonkey, or Typeform.

It's easier to perform if your members have been informed about the importance of feedback to the general body and what implications it has on them. Make sure everyone RSVP for the event, inform them about a quick survey at the end of the event, then administer the survey. Make sure the survey is not too lengthy or if possible make it multiple choice questions and a single field for "suggestions". NB: it should not be lengthy

3 Design your questions

The quality of your feedback is largely determined by the quality of your questions. To ensure that your questions are clear, concise, relevant, and unbiased, avoid leading, loaded, or double-barreled questions. When designing good questions, use simple and direct language that your audience can understand, open-ended questions for detailed responses, closed-ended questions for specific answers, rating scales to measure agreement or satisfaction, multiple-choice or check-box questions to offer a range of options or categories, and follow-up or probing questions to clarify or expand on answers.

In our work, we also test the questions with community members. Their feedback leads not only to improvements of language, format and accessibility but also on potential gaps. I find the latter particularly important as it gives an additional opportunity to the community we work with to influence the process.

When you have your goals, methods, and questions ready, it's time to start collecting data from the community. Consider choosing the right time and place to reach your audience, and use multiple channels and platforms to distribute surveys, interviews, or feedback forms. Incentivizing or rewarding respondents for their participation and feedback can be beneficial, as well as ensuring confidentiality and anonymity. Additionally, make sure to follow ethical and legal guidelines for data collection and protection, while tracking and monitoring response rate and data quality.

Collecting data can be a very time consuming task and in my opinion needs to be well thought in advance. Are there processes that can be automated? How are we going to aggregate data if we use various collection methods? When budgets are tight, these are important questions to ask ourselves very early on.

After you have collected your data, you need to analyze it to extract meaningful and actionable insights. To do this, you can use descriptive statistics to summarize and visualize your quantitative data, thematic analysis to identify and code the main themes and patterns in your qualitative data, comparative analysis to examine the differences and similarities between different groups or segments of your audience, and inferential statistics to test your hypotheses and draw conclusions from your data.
