How can you gain Live Events experience when starting out?

I've found that volunteering is one of the simplest ways to get experience on all aspects of live event production. You can really see what happens behind the scenes and get better perspective for what is necessary to pull off an event at scale.

Volunteering is a great way to get your foot in the door with live events. I've interviewed many professional event organizers for my podcast in addition to the hundreds events I've hosted myself. Event organizers all agree that volunteers that show up and work hard get noticed. They're the first ones to get offered a paying job when one comes up. They're often supported too if they want to go out and start their own events. One of the very first volunteers for my business networking series is now on the board of directors at just 22 years old. He's also out putting on his own events too that we support.

In my experience I have found volunteering allows you to be more in tune to what’s happening in the echo system you are a part of. For me, helping others makes me happier in general and when at events, if I have not pre-arranged to volunteer, I show up and offer a much as I can. It’s a great a way to be intentional with networking. Just be sure to you are doing it for the right reasons. It will show up, if you are not! Genuine intentions do make a noticeable difference.

I was lucky enough to live in Kalamazoo, MI, and the Civic Theatre was rich with volunteer opportunities onstage, backstage, and front of house. Consider local community theaters near you!

I got into events myself by just doing it. We hosted house shows at our dingy punk house while I was in college. We rented out movie theaters and hosted screenings of indie films. Don't wait for someone to give you permission. Just do it. You'll make mistakes, but that's those are the most valuable lessons. That's called experience.

Not only are internships or apprenticeships valuable, but if you live in a metropolitan area, there are always opportunities with professional sports teams for game day staff. These are often hard jobs to get, require a lot of flexibility given the seasonality and irregularity of schedules, but provide a paid opportunity to execute sponsorships at significant events and get a foot in the door with a pro sports team!

There is always a demand for production assistants at experiential agencies, and they are often willing to consider someone with no prior experience.
