Volunteer experience is career building experience and many time it tells more of a story about what you do in your roles, than paid career positions. Treat it like any other experience on your resume and speak to it in your interview.

Sometimes, you will be able to showcase experience the hiring manager is seeking from your volunteer experience rather than your work experience (ie: you are seeking a leadership position but have not yet had any in your professional life. However, you have three years in a leadership role as a volunteer. That counts, in my opinion).

Don't think volunteering isn't "work" because of a lack of a paycheck. Quite the opposite - it shows internal motivation, belief in an organization, and a desire to help the mission succeed. So much incredible advice & in all honesty, a lot of it contradicts itself and that's ok. Remember, resumes are subjective. Here are things that you should consider: 1. Are you connected to anyone in the organization, especially a hiring manager. No one has a better understanding of the format a company wants a resume in than a recruiter or hiring manager. 2. Make sure the volunteer experience IS RELEVANT TO THE JOB!!! As a volunteer EMT, a job that was not relevant to being a veteran transition advocate, the main skills were not relevant. A few transferable skills, but the number of lives I have saved doesn't translate to the number of veterans I can recruit. Make sure you read all the responses & listen to what's the most sense to you.
