The initial assessment is always the key to future success. I do agree to the need assessment but would like to add more onto that. It's more about the target of the organisation as a whole. -Is it just for one process? -Are we going to migrate all our processes to this platform? -Is our organisation internal road map aligned to help automation and process streamlining? -The daily users of the processes are willing to migrate to new platform or not? Depending on size and complexity of organisational goal BPM software platform selection should happen.

Agreeing with the outline above but that is one perspective. Main driving force behind the selection should be time to live, ease of use and product support. Time to live means least amount of coding or effort bringing maximum output. Ease of use will ensure daily process users are excited to migrate to new platform. Extensive product support ensures that the platform remains in top shape performance and productivity wise also will cater to new feature requests.

This point above is absolutely crucial to any BPM success story. But it's not only the readiness of the BPM topl of choice how easily it can integrate with internal or external sources. The organisation need to mobilise a drive to make data available to the platform like exposing APIs for consumption. BPM tools which have out of box connectors for popular other data or service platforms will definitely have faster time to live, rather than the ones which tend to require more customisation.
