How can you find a mentor who challenges your perspective?

The best way to get a mentor who would add real value to you is to define the results you are looking for, even before you start looking for someone. There are different goals, for instance: - To follow a similar path than someone you admire; - To open you doors in a specific organization/ area; - To offer you generic career advice, etc. The key element is that you define what is that you're looking for and you get someone that will help you to meet that desire/ need. If you're looking for someone to offer you a different perspective, look for someone with a career path that is not 'logical' to you or someone from a different industry. Having a different background to you or to make different choices is what could help you here.

I believe that one needs to establish trust with the mentor to create a safe space for different and conflicting perspectives to co-exist. It becomes a lot easier for the mentor to share their perspective, knowing that the inputs will be considered with an open mindset. It is also important to establish that in the end the choice is always yours whether you accept or reject that perspective in your situation, and the mentor doesn't feel too attached to the perspective they provide. Personally, seeking different perspectives has accelerated my own growth, and it's one of the best things you can do to push yourself out of your comfort zone.

This is probably the most under -practiced and under-rated idea. Seeking out diverse perspectives actually helps you reflect on your own, identify biases, highlight skill or knowledge gaps. It makes you a better mentee and a better mentor.

Interesting point. Seek out individuals with different backgrounds, experiences, and viewpoints. Someone who comes from a different industry, culture, or discipline can offer fresh insights and challenge your assumptions. And maybe someone who's more senior too.

Engage in Thoughtful Conversations: When meeting potential mentors, engage them in discussions on topics you find challenging or that interest you. Notice if they push you to think differently or offer perspectives you hadn’t considered.

Finding a mentor who challenges your perspective is deeply linked to the ability to listen actively and respectfully. I helped someone with this a couple decades ago. A bright young man with a challenging future before him. I became his mentor. He was smart and most of the people he interacted with, didn't challenge him at all, not that they agreed, just didn't do anything. I asked him questions and walked him through his thoughts to in a natural process. I opened his eyes to a new world. He became very successful and happy in life. I found this very rewarding. I wasn't an obivous choice for mentor. Seek a challenge and be challenged.

Giving advice can be beneficial. However, if a "do that, and you become successful " approach would work, we would all be Richard Branson, Elon Musk, or Steve Jobs. So, the best Mentors will help you live YOUR successful life by - listening deeply to what you are saying - asking questions that will help you explore your world - messing up with your thinking and your limiting beliefs - discovering blind spots that are holding you back If you're looking for a Mentor, ensure they empower you rather than giving you advice, and magic will happen.

Network Outside Your Comfort Zone: Attend conferences, workshops, or networking events where you can meet people outside your usual circle. Look for those who are not only experienced but also have a reputation for critical thinking and pushing boundaries.
