Even with the right questions very often a mentor who specializes in your field cannot be bothered to develop a relationship with the mentee. This is even more evident today with chat GPT. There are so many alternatives to find a solution to answers. Finding a mentor is therefore first and foremost about the connection that can be created through dialogue. A mentor- regardless of its social, economic or statuary position should be a friend. A good mentor listens and expresses him or herself clearly enough for you to understand. A good mentor is therefore one who know how to anticipate just like how a good mentee is one that shows up and does their “homework”.

Definitely, Kindness is key and remaining polite and coherent throughout mentor<>mentee interaction is important. If you feel like you don’t agree with your mentor - ask questions. If your interaction did not satisfy you - express your concerns with a short note. If the mentor cares to help he/she will get back in touch with further clarifications. Gifts are always nice indeed, but what is essentially here is mindfulness. Behave with courtesy and act with delicacy. Appreciate the time you have both booked to exchange and smile. It helps to add words of kindness for courtesy as you don’t want to avoid offending. Stay authentic but don’t be rude. A small conversation can lead, a long way.
