I respectfully disagree with this recommendation. While expanding your network is absolutely important, the mentor-mentee relationship is highly personal and (professionally) intimate. I recently shared some thoughts on this in a LI post: think about someone in your network who you look up to, have a relationship with, and whose values and approach to life make sense to you. The first name that comes to mind is who you should ask to be your mentor. It's a bit awkward at first to ask someone because you're probably friends with them but trust me, they'll be flattered and will likely jump at the chance.

Finding a good mentor is enriched when considering diverse experiences. Seek a mentor who has traversed various realms, navigating challenges and triumphs across different domains. Diverse experience brings a breadth of perspectives, offering a well-rounded mentorship that extends beyond a singular field. A mentor with diverse experience not only imparts valuable knowledge but also provides insights from various contexts. This broader understanding can be instrumental in shaping a more adaptable and versatile mentee. It facilitates a dynamic exchange where solutions from one realm might be creatively applied to challenges in another.

Go into mentorship sessions with humility and remember that one of the primary purposes of a mentor/mentee relationship is to strengthen your professional and leadership skills. Expect to hear feedback that you don't like hearing.... it's literally the point! That uncomfortable feeling is where growth starts. Don't be afraid to ask questions if the feedback you're receiving doesn't make sense, but don't be defensive or push back when you don't like the feedback you're getting. Remember that everyone has areas they can improve on... even your mentor. They have your best interest in mind and are carving time out of busy schedules to help you out so mediate on their feedback and use it to be a better version of yourself.
