Having worked in construction for years, I think there are a couple of important things that should be considered before considering insulation. The first thing to consider is the customer's final energy bill, i. e., the reason for choosing an insulation system is to lower the cost of heating and/or cooling a home. There is a trade off, of course. The more insulation one installs, the lower the eventual energy bill, but the more the whole project will cost. The second thing to consider is that insulation is just one part of the wall assembly. The more insulation, or the more importantly the less vapor permeable it is, the more likely water vapor will reach the dew point inside the wall assembly, and cause permanent damage.
