Within the world of writing, you want to niche down to the type of writing - so I specialise in copywriting, where I write to persude. Even further than that, I specialise in writing online content for social media and websites within the marketing and sales sphere. There are other niches within medical writing, such as writing regulatory documents, clinical trial protocols and medical education. You want to fill your writing portfolio with samples of specific types of writing, so clients can see your experience and trust you with a specific job.

Another way to upgrade your skills is to work with other writers or become a mentor. You learn more from experience and interacting with people. Don't view people as your competition - we all want to be successful, and we can help each other achieve our goals. I do read a lot of copywriting books too, and practise writing exercises. I recommend you dissect sentences, paragraphs and essays to figure out their structure and why it works so well (or what you would improve to help it flow better). Working with editors will teach you a lot about your writing style too, as they are a pair of fresh eyes over your work, and they work with a lot of writers that they give advice to.

It's important to specify exactly where your writing will go. For example, saying "social media posts" can be vague. Instead, specify LinkedIn posts for your business page, or Instagram posts for your company page etc. If you specialise in SEO for product pages, then say so - this is very lucrative compared to content pages where you answer FAQs (although equally important!) Also specify the audience you write for - in medical writing, you can write for the general public, a patient audience, healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses, pharmacists) and even stakeholders and investors. By knowing the language your target audience uses, you can connect with them through your writing and get them to take action.

Outsourcing your task can help expand copywriting but it needs to be outsourced to people who you are sure will do a great job or else it will only earn you a bad review.
