Or is it simply filling a gap, avoiding a conflict, or indicating a pause? Depending on the purpose, the silence can have different effects on the audience and the story.
To my opinion, whatever the purpose, 'silence' in dialogues should be natural as in life. I'd say it is very hard to put it on purpose. Rather I think one should aim peppering the dialogue with 'pauses' after the whole scene or dialogue is finished. To create natural flow, one should start with the dialogue itself, and its meaning in the overall story. Once it is finished, it can be, if needed 'peppered', with 'silences'.
The use of silence in a screenplay's dialogue can be evaluated based on its impact on pacing, tension, and emotional depth. Strategic deployment of silence can create a sense of anticipation, allow for character introspection, and enhance the overall rhythm of the narrative. Effective use of silence can convey emotions and subtext, encouraging audience engagement and interpretation. But remember that overuse may lead to ambiguity or a lack of clarity. So evaluating the use of silence involves assessing its contribution to the storytelling goals and ensuring it complements the overall narrative structure. It takes a happy balance and the perfect moment! No matter what, keep creating!
The next step is to evaluate the length of each silence in your dialogue. How long is the silence lasting? Is it a brief pause, a long gap, or a complete absence of dialogue? The length of the silence can affect the pace, the tone, and the impact of the scene. A short silence can create a quick beat, a subtle hint, or a comic relief. A long silence can create a slow burn, a deep impression, or a dramatic tension. A no-dialogue scene can create a visual focus, a emotional resonance, or a thematic statement.
I believe that the length of each 'silence' in a particular dialogue should be decided by those who act it out - actors and actresses. This way it will be more natural.
The third step is to compare the silence in your dialogue with the action in your scene. What is happening on the screen while the characters are silent? Is the action complementing, contradicting, or enhancing the silence? The action can provide context, clues, or cues for the silence, as well as show the character's reactions, intentions, or emotions. The action can also create movement, contrast, or balance with the silence, as well as add interest, variety, or surprise to the scene.
In my experience, there are two types of action that contrast or complement dialogues - 1) background action 2) dialogue related action. For example, a silence in the dialogue of characters can coincide with someone getting up and storming out of the room, or someone dropping something, or a couple or friends or colleagues embracing etc. This can be a mirror of the untold words during the silence. In the second case 2), silence can be accompanied by certain actions or inaction of the participants. For example, moving objects on the table, looking at one's watch, clapping, smiling, laughing, crying, etc. These actions will be acted silences in the dialogue.
The fourth step is to check the frequency of the silence in your dialogue. How often are you using silence in your script? Is it a rare occurrence, a common feature, or a dominant element? The frequency of the silence can affect the rhythm, the style, and the meaning of your screenplay. A rare silence can create a special effect, a memorable moment, or a significant change. A common silence can create a natural flow, a consistent mood, or a clear message. A dominant silence can create a minimalist approach, a challenging experience, or a profound statement.
In my opinion, frequency of the silence can be also assigned not only to the whole screenplay/script but also to each character. It is one of the ways to create their differing styles and contrasts.
The fifth step is to consider the genre of your screenplay. What are the expectations, conventions, and trends of the genre you are writing in? How does the silence in your dialogue fit or deviate from them? The genre can influence the amount, the type, and the role of the silence in your script. Some genres, such as horror, thriller, or drama, may rely more on silence to create atmosphere, tension, or emotion. Some genres, such as comedy, action, or musical, may use silence more sparingly or strategically to create contrast, punchline, or break. Some genres, such as sci-fi, fantasy, or animation, may have more flexibility or creativity with silence to create world, character, or style.
I'd say, one should not really consider the style too much when deciding on silences as it will lead to artificialness in approach.
The final step is to seek feedback on the silence in your dialogue. How do other people, such as readers, peers, or professionals, react to the silence in your script? Do they understand, appreciate, or enjoy the silence? Do they have any suggestions, questions, or criticisms about the silence? Feedback can help you validate, improve, or revise the silence in your dialogue, as well as learn from different perspectives, experiences, or preferences. Feedback can also help you gauge the effectiveness, the originality, or the appeal of the silence in your script.
