Many factors come into play when it comes to PLC communication: PLC's are limited resource assets which means knowing the limit of the PLC is very important. Every PLC has its own set of limitations in regards to IO (DI,AI,DO,AO) Points, Communication channels it can handle. Defining right network topology is the key and if needed segregation of communication should be done over sever communication processors which can reduce the load on the PLC's. Ensuring, every PLC polls comes back with the data is important, Its always a good practice to receive the data only when there are changes. Ensuring the number of hops in the network is not more than 30. Know the limits of the communication protocols being used, for instance Modbus,TCP,Profibus
