1 Light quality

Light quality of a installation is a very important in terms of user comfort. Actually light quality is difficult to change in an existing installation by adjusting the placement of luminaires and add or remove luminaires. The important parameters like CRI, Color temperature, Glare rating need to be decided when selecting the fittings at the initial stage of the planning. Another important thing is using the full spectrum luminaires. Otherwise even if we get different color temperature fittings, they will have high blue ray amount which is destructive for the eye.

In my experience reducing the energy consumption is easy using the LED luminaires. But what is the ultimate goal of reducing the energy consumption, I think it is to reduce the carbon foot print. But To reduce the carbon foot print we increase the demand for electronics. But how can we dispose that electronic waste in long term. We need to think bout both sides when going for a sustainable development.

When evaluating a control system, look beyond the code requirements. Focus on how users interact with the space and the lighting. Mismatching the controls in a space can lead to more energy costs because the users will do whatever they can to bypass your controls. Daylight Harvesting areas should operate smoothly so users don't even notice light changes. Occupancy control zones need to resemble the space and where people congregate. Preset scenes need to be labeled and functional to an activity. Effective lighting control will enhance the users experience. Bad lighting control will act against the users and be bypassed as a result.

4 User satisfaction

A fourth aspect to evaluate when assessing a lighting system is the level of user satisfaction. User satisfaction refers to the degree of satisfaction and comfort that the occupants express with the lighting system and its impact on their health, well-being, and productivity. The most common thing I hear from customers and colleagues alike, "Once you install a fixture, good luck finding parts." Solid State Lighting has made leaps and bounds towards reliability and lifespan of a light fixture. This has come however at the cost of serviceable parts. Lenses, LED boards and even drivers are difficult to come by post installation. Choose your culprit, but the result ends up be appliance fixtures that are easier to replace than to service. I'm not advocating for the "Good 'ole days" but telling a customer that replacing all of their 5 year old flat panels is cheaper than providing new drivers is no plan for sustainability. Challenge your lighting providers for warranty information, serviceability and retrofit options.
