In my experience, you need not reinvent the wheel, why not learn from those who have gone before you to assess the vendors reputation in terms of Implementation delivery, whether it is timely, post-implementation support, and customer service. Customer references and testimonials are a good way to determine vendor credibility before you commit. While undertaking your referencing, the tech solution implemented need not be 100 percent what you are looking to implement, you should also consider aspects such as the vendor methodology, success rate with past projects, innovation, and team skill set.

Always thought a PoC would suffice. For a 5-10 year investment it is wort doing a 1-3 month PoC. Vendors/Suppliers should support this and especially for the chosen solution.
